And BMW as a brand finished 8th overall.
So makes you wonder where BMW gets the reputation that it's cars aren't reliable. Is it the expense of the repairs that eventually happen? Or is it BMWs are problem free while under warranty, but fall apart by 100K miles (This study follows 3 year old cars)? |

My 2016 M235 has been very reliable and probably one of the most reliable cars I've owned (previously owned almost entirely Japanese cars). With that said, I still wouldn't touch a BMW class that's any higher than a 3 series. All the tech they're cramming in is too much.

People take baseless opinions from "influencers" like Scotty Kilmer and just parrot it like fact. If you watch that guys YouTube videos you would think 9 out of every 10 BMWs sold explode immediately and anyone who has ever owned a BMW is now dead and broke.
I personally think most major market cars have similar reliability in the 5 year 70k mile range and greater longevity is mostly a case of proper maintenance and limited abuse. |

I've heard it conjectured that the 2 series has had consistently better quality because of the fact that it's generally one of the last models to get the new gadgets, gizmos and features and thus by the time they make it into the 2 they are well tested and have the bugs worked out. They generally get less of the frills so there is less to go wrong.
I'm also hoping that the Toyota quality control / testing that went into the B58 engine helps as well. |

I agree, BMW has stepped up their game in the last decade and it shows!
I also like the "trickle down" theory. The 2-series gets only mature technology, and it costs less. As so often in life, less is more . What also impresses me is that many of our cars are driven pretty hard, they are taken to the track and some are heavily modified. So when you compare to other brands whose drivers use those cars more as appliances - think Lexus ES - it is really not an apples to apples comparison looking simply at the number of issues per car.

Some of us wish we had the choice of a BMW with even less frou-frou on it.

Nice! Looks like we made a great choice, and were in the right area overall! We had a Lexus GS350 that we traded for the M240, but we were also looking at the 4 Series. She wanted an AWD Convertible.. the M4 was too much, so the M240 was perfect for her!

The fair number of us of who've had the cooling hose fail might disagree slightly with some of you bragging about Toyota-level reliability.

It's funny because I'm also on a G70 face book page and they are all exited on their top reliability score. None of them realize their G70's weren't even being sold in the USA for the 17' model year group while this study was being conducted.

Pushing 49k miles and nothing but maintenance so far. Love the B58 and this platform to death.

I'm confused, the link lists the 4er and I don't see reference to the 2er anywhere. Am I missing something?

The 2 is there under small premium car.
The entire list contains 4 BMW products across the spectrum, tied with Toyota, which is famously reliable. Good for BMW! |

Many thanks for your comment. The problem is a bit less harmless than you imply. The issue is not the 40 bucks, sir. It's the nuisance (and potential danger) of your car overheating due to the break in the hose. It's not that fun to have an overheating car on an isolated road at night... because your car has a crappy coolant hose.

Happened to me a couple month ago. I got stranded 100 miles from home. It was a lot more than $40 to take care of the repairs and rental car
It's the only major thing that happened in 100k though. It could be much worse.
