So its late and my eyes hurt but I tried to read this whole thread. Its been super helpful and I know what I want to do, I think, for my car with HiFi audio.
I have one question that I couldn't find an answer to, can you swap the Hifi amplifier with the amplifier from the HK system? They are readily available for a couple hundred on eBay. |

So I decided to start with the door seals (done already), JL's in the rear (on the way), ASD Bypass (on the way), potentially the factory rear fender well sound deadening(not on the M2) and probably disconnecting the center channel(going to do the JL's first). I will try to elaborate on what I think each has done when I do it.
Could someone explain to me the 3rd hole mounting for the JL's in pictures if possible? I see some people saying add a washer but where? Do you drill through or screw through and make a hole with the washer? Pictures please if possible. Additionally- do you need those wire adapters for the JL speakers? I'm going to see how I think all of this improves the system before going to the front doors which I may have a pro do. |

G'day Folks,
Fantastic thread! Tons of great information. One question on the Eton speakers. They now sell a B100 W AND a B100 W2. Does anyone know the difference? The specs on the Eton website seem to be identical. B100 W: https://www.eton-gmbh.com/en/product...oduct/b-100-w/ B100 W2: https://www.eton-gmbh.com/en/product...duct/b-100-w2/ Thanks! Ken |

I have the component 2-way Etons in my M240i. They come with a blocking capacitor that prevents frequencies below a specific frequency from getting to the tweeter.

Has anyone tried the Eton B100-N on the rear shelf? Curious how they compare to the JLs.
Thanks - Ken

Out of interest when did you purchase the kit? There was some discussion a few pages back as to whether the kit has changed, hence the need for the separate crossover purchase.

I would use them if you don't use a crossover anywhere else -- say, within an aftermarket amp, DSP unit, etc. They are basically the same thing as the physical crossover units supplied with most other component speaker sets -- which are also optional if you're using crossovers anywhere else.

Until seeing this thread, I’d regretted not waiting for a car with the HK option (it’s my wife’s car, mostly, and the selection was all about colors). One thing the Hi-Fi has going for it is under-seat woofers with decent extension, so I tried the Eton component set in the doors, and unplugged the center. Those plus the HK sail panels = $400 for what’s a pretty nice result -- everything the car should have had in a standard system (and would have cost BMW about $50 more net than the speakers they installed). So thanks to all for the suggestions. Mainly wanted to comment on the B100XHP crossovers (~$80 for 2). Was told by the distributor that these are necessary if the B100W speakers are used with the OE amp, cutting off around 150 – 180 Hz (there are wired high-pass filters in the Eton tweeter leads already). There’s a caution in the B100W manual not to drive the mids at high volume below 150 Hz. So the XHPs can protect those speakers. However they also told me the XHPs make the system sound better, enabling the under-seat woofers to fill in more bass and boosting the midrange of the mids. Anyone know if this is accurate? I like the additional mid-bass of the Etons without the XHPs, so cropping them at 150Hz seems counterintuitive but would be a fairly easy A-B comparison to try them. But no, you don't need them for the tweeters. |

Meanwhile, across the pond from me, my favorite rag EVO has a piece on the latest M240i. They raved about the HK sound system. Does it improve in damp weather or maybe when driving on the other side?

ETON B100W - where?
I did the Eton / JL Audio upgrade for my '16 228 with Harmon Kardon system and it has been great. I'm turning the car in (it was a lease) an picking up a '19 230 on Thursday. Rather than go through the trouble of removing the Etons I am considering purchasing a new pair, but I can't find them anywhere except for places like Lithuania.
Any suggestions as to where else I might purchase, or whether this is still the best cost-effective upgrade from the HK system? Thanks |

Unplugged the center channel today to follow on the ASD bypass I did weeks ago and I wasn't really expecting too much of an improvement, but I am stunned. I actually notice the sound around me and don't feel like the car has only one center speaker anymore. I don't consider myself an audiophile at all, but this was a dramatic improvement for me. Going to order the door seals to try and reduce the tire noise I get from the front and I'll likely be done tinkering.

Do I have that right? If not - e.g., if it goes between the main driver and tweeter so as to send frequencies only above 150Hz to the tweeter - then is it necessary vs. the capacitor that comes with the kit? |

- High-pass: allows frequencies above a certain point through - Low-pass: allows frequencies below a certain point through - Band-pass: allows frequencies between a low point and a high point through - Band-stop: rejects frequencies between a low point and a high point If you have an amp, a DSP, etc. with an adjustable high-pass filter, you do not need to install that 'capacitor'. Simply set that filter to 150 Hz, and it'll do the same thing (and probably better).

What I have is the HK system that comes with the '19 230i I'm picking up today. I'm not aware of the signal processing this system does. In my previous '16 228 with the HK System, I used the capacitor - I believe the Eton B100XHP was not available back then. So I am seeking advise of whether to use the capacitor that comes with the Eton B100 speaker kit, placing it between the main driver and tweeter, or the B100XHP. Thanks much! |
