New 17" Mac Book Pro

To nobody's surprise Apple releases another sexy ass lap top. I'm kinda confused about one thing though. In the video they say this laptop wont have a replaceable battery and can be recharged a 1000 times. What happens after you use those 1000 recharges? You throw away your laptop?

I'm not sure about that...did you drop by one of the stores to look at them? I can understand not having a compartment for the iPods, but for the laptops? Covering the customers shipping charges would be very expensive for Apple. I have a Macbook Pro 15" (not the new Core 2 Duos though) and I have taken it twice for batter replacement at the store (with battery compartment). If you decide to buy one, best thing you can do is get the extended warranty

If you need to change the battery, you'll just have to take it to the Apple Store and they will replace the battery for you for $179. Theoretically you won't have to do that for another 3 or 5 years (depending on your usage) - by then you may end up buying a new laptop anyway :P

I just checked the webpage and the new laptops still have a batt. compartment. I wouldn't set in stone the 3-5 years battery life span. My laptop was always hooked to a wall (and it wasn't my main computer in terms of usage) and in almost 3 years with it I already had 2 battery replacements As long as it it within the warranty period you don't get charge for the replacement. Not sure if Apple has switch to a better quality battery for their newer models

i just got back from macworld. i got to play with it for a bit and it is sexy. i just hate the black keyboard and the black bezel around the display. oh, and the shiny-ass display itself is like a mirror. they had the matte one there too. i can't believe it's a $50 "upgrade."

i actually caught them using the word "upgrade," i said if the glossy screen is amazing and awesome, howcome the matte display is considered an upgrade. they had no asnwer.

it's definitely beautiful, thin and light for its size though.

The new MBP is pretty badass looking. I am still happy with my 17" core 2 with a matte screen, I really don't see too many reasons why it would benefit me to upgrade. I personally prefer the matte screen because of the many different variables of light conditions I work in.

hahaa thats a good one. I think only time will tell if the unibody design is really worth it. If it's 3-5 years then i don't think 179 dollars is that bad. Only drawback now is that you can't upgrade your ram and stuff without taking the whole unit apart.

I remember reading that they would replace it if it dies prematurely. But, you have to send the enitre thing in. I think they didn't make it removable b/c it's the 17in and honestly, if you buy the 17inch you don't really care about portability

That's your problem. You're destroying your battery on your own. Laptops aren't designed to stay pugged in at all times. You crystallize the battery since you're not using it's full capacity. By leaving it plugged in, the battery will repeatedly die 5% and then recharge while never using the other 95% of the battery. Over time that 95% crystallizes and becomes worthless. You MUST allow the battery to die at the very least 1-2 times a month to keep the battery in a healthy working state.

This goes for cell phone batteries as well, or any li-on battery.

was reading text on websites difficult with that really high resolution screen?

Did the matte option look just like the current matte screens on macbooks?

Yeah, I have the previous generation MBP. Love it. My only complaint is the heat when running graphic intensive programs. But daaaaamn the new 17" is pricey.

I also have a 20" Imac.. Sadly it crapped out on me after 1.5 years.
Graphics card integrated with motherboard is not cool... Replacement cost estimated was $933 because they have to replace the whole motherboard just because graphics card fried lol

Applecare does not cover it

You running smcFanControl? You'll need it for the previous gen MBPs... need to bump it up to at least 3k rpm.

I dunno about you but I did not pay 2799 for mine. I think the previous gen was around 2300 and it wasnt the base model

My 17" MBP was $2799 base back when I bought it on March 2008( ok $2599 since I used my EDU discount. ). The lowest I believe Apple's 17" laptop was $2599-2699 and that was back in the Powerbook days.

The unibody macbook pros run a lot cooler. Mine only gets really hot when playing games in vista.

if each charge lasts approx 7 hrs, by the time you need a new battery you'll want a new laptop... same thing for the ipods, by the time they need a battery replacement the new one will be out. nowadays it's usually cheaper to buy new then replace parts on old stuff... i never understand when people ask about replacing shit... you're not going to keep anything that long.
