Had the gearbox fluid changed as well and noticed much smoother shifts.

my car is due its service now - so I think I will ask the dealer to do the gear box fluid change also now - after reading this.

cant hurt can it? (except the wallet that is)

main service, so plugs, filter and engine oil to change.

been quoted £450 here in the uk for the service. would need to add the gearbox fluid change on top of this.

car is march 2014 build so 4 years old now with 17k miles.

I've given it some thought and I'm going to do mine myself. you can find mtf-lt-3 online for $40/qt. I also snagged a magentiezed drain plug which should help with life of the transmission.

one day on the jacks and I can do my tire rotation at the same time. well worth it.

2015 228i manual, btw

If you get an oil analysis kit for gearboxes - and ask the tech to grab a sample mid stream while emptying - you can kind of verify the service is actually being performed. And you get to analyze the gearbox.

There has been some discussion about LT3 versus LT5. LT5 is recommended for both the P car PDK and the BMW DCT, both of which are manuals at the core. You can get LT5 Pentosin on Amazon pretty cheap. It holds 1.4L per the TIS. This is the route I'm going to go very soon. I'm also sending a sample in with my engine oil into Blackstone as well.

I've been mulling this for months. my transmission specifically says Lt-3 only. which made me pucker and not spring for the lt-5.

do you have any info on one over the other and why? I've seen that lt-5 is for 235 and lt-3 in my 228.

I believe there was discussion in the forums that the LT3 was originally for the M235 6MT as well and then it was changed to the LT5. My thoughts are if it was changed from 3-5 for that BMW manual of the same era then why not.

Here's what I got back from Blackstone on my 6MT oil sample. I had 71,321 miles on this fluid.
