I think the M-boys can build an exciting 2 litre-4 banger turbo with a 10K redline and 375-400 HP, and torque to spare

BMW M12/M13 turbo 1.5 liter four cylinder Formula 1 motor - The BMW M12 was by far the most powerful F1 engine of all time, running 5.5 bar of boost during qualifying in the Brabham BT55 in 1986, resulting in 1400 bhp, and in later versions, were tilted 72 degrees to lower the weight in the chassis... The biggest problem was they they tripled their horsepower within a 1000rpm rev range making them extremely hard to drive....

… Pocket Rocket to the max and with modern electronics it would be a "drivable beast"!

Bring it!

For the record: the M2 was deemed to get a 4-cyl. (a reworked N20 engine).

SCOTT26 confirmed the 4-cyl. layout even in January 2014. Apparently BMW M has changed plans around Winter 2013-2014: the M2 4-cyl. plan was shelved - the M2 gets a 6-cyl. (N55B30T0).
  • "Although work has commenced on the "Downsized" M, The M2 or the replacement for the most admired 1er M Coupe.
It is known as the "Downsized" M because BMW M are investigating the concept of a completely reworked N20 based four cylinder in terms of the successor to the 1M offering the same recipe as before but with lower weight but still offering the entry to M ownership with the key of precision rather than outright power."

    http://www.f30post.com/forums/showpo...9&postcount=23 - July 2012)
  • "BMW M2 Coupe - Successor to the BMW 1 Series M Coupe continues the same formula that made the last car be memorable, no huge competitor in the HP race, four cylinder will bring less weight, which matter most as does more enjoyment and overall feel is considered to be more of a priority than who has the biggest numbers. Already confirmed to be coming by BMW CEO.
BMW M2 Gran Coupe - Baby Coupe inherits a four door brother and RWD, Direct competitor to the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG. Scott26 shares that there are now firm plans for an M2 Gran Coupe."

    (http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=818302 - March 2013)
  • "Drop two cylinders of the Autoexpress article [i.e. 4-cyl. instead of 6-cyl.].
BMW want the fastest four cylinder car in its segment. They also want the M2 to be the most progressive and dynamic car in its segment as well as the lightest performance car. They want a car that has a soul, unlike the Mercedes-Benz AMG A45/CLA 45 which are soulless to drive."
    (http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showp...77&postcount=3 - January 2014)
But it's true that 3 cyl. and 4 cyl. is the future, before all goes electric.

Let's see what an eventual M2 GTS/CSL will sport engine-wise.

Ya but how much does scott confirm things? He isn't an official spokesman. AFAIK he speculates for the most part, albeit with a leg up on us.

Is a M2 Gran Coupe still in the cards to compete with the RS3, Golf R, CLA AMG, etc.

Most people are concerned with the weight but for example lets look at the Porsche 911 GT3 vs the new GT3 RS, yes it does have a different engine and it does add weight but even with all the carbon fiber and lightweight components it's only 10 kg lighter. The 1 series M was 3340 lb vs 3335 lb from the 135is (taken from Car and driver) so I really don't get why people are so concerned about the weight, yes it would be awesome to have a M2 under 3400 lbs but I doubt it would happen, can it be lighter than the M235i, maybe, but if it comes with 19 inch wheels (like the prototypes) bigger brakes, LSD standard, and DCT that adds more weight.

For me...I will be debating between a used Golf R and the lease of an M2

If a 15,000 mile (or 1.5-2 year old) Golf R is sitting at $25,000 USD, it will be quite interesting.

I'm assuming the M2 will come with a manual option, but that's also a deal breaker for me.

Color Options: I would really like a blue similar to Estoril Blue. Graphite Gray (Old E90 color) would be nice too. White would be my 3rd option =/

Review: I want to see how Car & Driver would rate it.

I'm just hoping that the MT version either doesn't have auto rev-matching, or BMW has gotten smart enough to let us turn it on or off in any drive mode.

I guess we'll see.

From what I have read about the M4, auto rev-mathcing on the MT is nice on daily commutes. The car automatically disables it when you put it in sport+, right? Just having an on/off feature would be ideal.

I would prefer it off.
I unconsciously rev match when driving anyway, even in my daily.

The F8x makes sure that the engine is revved to a certain rpm, given the speed and gear into which it is being shifted. If the driver revs the engine to the necessary rpm, the car will not add any more throttle input. If the driver does not rev the engine or does not rev the engine enough, the car will add throttle input to reach the target engine speed.

If it were an optional feature, I wouldn't select it. However it's not the headache one might imagine and it's easily defeated via the Sport+ setting.

It seems that the majority of people who complain about the system don't have any firsthand experience with it.

The question should be who would keep you from getting an M2, my wife.

Several things could ruin the appeal:
- not significantly lighter than the M3/4. If less than 100lbs lighter, I'll pass.
- engine not feeling special enough. If I want an M235i, I'll get an M235i.
- limited production and/or dealer markup. No M car is worth that.

That's about it. I'm currently setting up a 3 year lease in an M3, and should be able to get into an M2 when I come out of that.

Bring it on!

Garage List
It must be at least 150 lbs lighter than M3/4. Otherwise it's pointless.

Hey all, I'm debating on acquiring an M2. However, I won't have an enclosed garage. I'll have an outdoor parking spot. It bothers me that the car will be outdoors subjected to the elements.

But it'll probably bother me more if I don't have this car to drive... Idk yet

Will a lot of you have the car parked outdoors? I can't build a tent/roof over my spot btw. Car cover is an option thou.

Not having an enclosed spot could prevent me from getting this car. My current ride is a 11WRX. I use to drive 07 335I... I miss it and I would like to jump back into the TI6 scene. Both cars are/were garaged indoors.

Would this make or break the deal for you?

Thx

My M4 is out on the driveway in the inclement UK weather, no problem.

Man up the car is waterproof just maybe needs a bit more cleaning.

Gotta remember it's 'just' a car nit a trophy?

I have a double garage but as it's a true daily for us, it's rarely in it unless it's completely blowing a gale. It'll be fine!

Sounds like the CF roof is out, 1st ding. I'd like to see the MT tech of the F8x which is what I'm leaning towards, I've got a DCT already. I suspect that it'll sound better than the F8x, the M235i already has that covered.

If it doesn't have same eps and MT trans (with auto rev match) as M3/4, then I'm for sure out.
