I was at the dealership yesterday and I heard the new car sales manager mention that their allocations had just come in — he and the salesperson he was speaking to were extremely pessimistic that anyone would want them. Big surprise.

If they are unable to sell the M235i, it will be down to their lack of sales skill as the vehicle is very competitive to the Mercedes AMG A35 and Audi S3 with the same transverse engined AWD layout that is FWD biased.

Haha I dont think they are referring to THEIR ability to move the car — but rather that they don't anticipate a lot of consumer demand. I'm honestly not that familiar with the comps you mentioned but I personally don't see the appeal of the 2 series GC so I tend to agree with the assessment. Based on a gut feeling more than hard facts, I'll admit.

If I want a Mini, I'll buy a Mini. The 2GC and M235i are the same platform as the JCW Mini, but different body. Likely not many transverse-engine FWD/AWD fans on this forum.

For some folks (perhaps that sales manager and sales person) it is bizarrely more “cool” to be a skeptic than an optimist. The 2 Gran Coupe will likely outsell the Coupe from the start among the majority of potential buyers who have no idea what a forum nor a platform are. The Mercedes A Class/GLA and Audi A3, whether in base models or performance-oriented, have expanded the definition of luxury 4 door cars at the low end. Expect to see these in suburbia and on college campuses. When GLA launched the first generation, a MB salesperson told me he could tell the moment some new prospects walked in the door...a dad with a late teens/college age daughter.

Four door, I believe? Both coupe and GC provide seating for four.

I think the GC will sell like hot cakes.

I think we may need to tone down our optimism due to price position in the showroom.

The upsell to a 330i will be quite easy, especially south of the Mason-Dixon where AWD will be of low perceived value versus the larger size for only two grand on a purchase of that scale. Lure them in with a small car and upsell the larger one...who ever heard of that before? It better look extremely "cuter" than the 3 in person for many in the target to stay with that model.

With enthusiasts who populate this board it won’t sell, but with the general public it is a more attractive package (more interior space, 4 doors, larger boot) than the current F22 2-series, especially as BMW stated a couple of years ago that the majority of customers don’t know or don’t care whether their 2WD cars are RWD or FWD. Luckily the enthusiasts still get the 2 door RWD coupe in the next generation.

Perhaps the biggest problem they'll have selling the 2 Series GC is the fact that it's base price isn't much below the base price of a 3 Series:

The 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Will Still Cost 3 Series Money For Some Reason

I would imagine, tho, it's pretty easy to quickly bump the price of the 3er up considerably with options. But then again, they essentially have the same interior / dash and there may be some folks that just want a smaller car. The 3 has gotten to be rather large.

Here in NE the price gap is much larger as AWD adds $2k to the price of a 3 Series.

The 2 also probably comes with other stuff that is extra cost on a 3 as well. And some number of people will like it better for one reason or another.

I really don't get the hate for this car. I have always liked how MINIs drive, so a MINI in an adult BMW suit makes perfect sense to me. But I am also a long-time SAAB/VW buyer as well as BMW buyer, so I have nothing against FWD to start with. Actually, not being able to buy a 2GC without AWD is a definite downside to me given I live in SW FL, where I need AWD like I need a couple of ex-wives.

Some years ago I visited Manhattan, and saw that traditional American made cars had a 0% market share. On a street of double parking you would have to wait till two spaces opened up to park one. In all the world a smaller car excels in any parking lot or garage. By some measures a smaller car is a better car.

Like Audi and Mercedes pricing the A3 and CLA close to the A4 and C Class?

I don't know why people are doubting this car like it's BMW taking a risk and being the only car in this market. If people are buying the Audi and Mercedes equivalent, people will buy the BMW.

I get it, people hate this car for what it is but at the end of the day, you don't have to wish for it's demise. Just don't buy it.

Interesting that if you load it up with similar features it cost just as much as an M240i!
