Will DCT Be Added into 2015 Model
I heard the tranny in current 2014 M235 model is pretty good already. But will 235 2015 model add option for DCT? even 135 has DCT in it!!
(I never tried a M car before, so I don't know what's the difference between a M DCT tranny verse the M235 tranny. Maybe I should sign for a M3 test drive.) |

No, I don't know why people keep wanting an DCT. Many, if not all the reviews say its just as good as an DCT. Even the motor trend review vs the CLA45 AMG says the 8 speed is better than its DCT.

Because they don't own a car with DCT. Those of us who do, know the DCT is still faster. I would still take the 8spd though, as it matches the car...more intelligent, efficient, etc.

DCT would probably put more power to the driving wheels since there is no torque converter.

AT vs DCT
There are some posts here with dyno numbers for 235 stock 8 speeds which are very impressive. I have the DCT in my 135, and I think I will be quite satisfied with the 8 speed in the 235. FYI, the DCT is the only auto I have had in the BMW's I've had (E36 M3, E46 M3) and it is great.

NO!
It doesn't need it. A ZF 8 speed with the BMW sport automatic program is better than any DCT I've driven, this includes my '14 M5. I'm not trying to say that DCTs are bad by any means. It's just that the ZF 8 speed is that good. look at the acceleration and EPA numbers, it's faster and more efficient than the 6 speed manual. At the same time it's has a smoother initial and takeoff and gear changes than are possible with a DCT. The only advantage I see with the DCT is slightly faster gear changes. If you were using it as a drag racer and thousandths of a second mattered... maybe the DCT would be better. |

I'm a Single Clutch Gearbox (SCG) guy myself and would not buy an automatic unless my left leg was not able to shift anymore but I have driven the M235i with the current automatic and I have driven M cars with it. My wife drives a Mk V GTI with dual clutch gearbox automatic. I liked the smoothness of the M235i transmission better than the both dual clutch boxes and it felt plenty quick on the shifts. There were many things I didn't care for in the M235 but the auto gearbox was actually a pleasant surprise for me. If the wife wanted a new BMW and the M235is auto was standard, I would have a really tough time paying $2900 for the DCT.

I believe that the only time the torque converter comes into play would be starting off in 1st as I believe ZF8 can change gears with the torque converter locked up. The only real parasitic loss would be the tranny pump and the shift times being slightly slower than DCT. I'd have a hard time paying anything more for a DCT over the excellent ZF auto. That said, I'm a 3 pedal kind of guy.

So many other issues that I would worry about before the auto gearbox. How about better non-digitized exhaust sound. A little more steering feedback. A little firmer brake pedal and a freakin' oil temp gauge and offer the Alcantara interior as base with leatherette as no cost option and leather pay option. Finally, Giugaro redesign the tail lights so they fit the car's shape.
my 2 cents. |

DCT is now the reserve of the ///M range only for future new cars, no non-///M cars will get the DCT - only the ZF8.
The Z4 35i is now the last non-M car to have the option of DCT.
