My dealer wants to charge me $400 for a new battery... Help!

do I have another option than getting gouged at the dealer?

is there really a difference between the battery the dealer sells me vs. an aftermarket battery?

if not what aftermarket battery should I get?

how do I get it registered?

my car is a 07 328i 4door

thanks!

i just had my battery replaced over this past weekend cuz my oem one died. it took me less than 5 min to SEARCH THE FORUM and find a gazillion threads about battery replacement. i found one thread about what batteries i can use, found another thread next to it about how to swap it out. dont be lazy.

I just had to do this. My local dealer price matched to the cheapest online price I could find. It was right around 200 after tax for the correct battery and I used my friends BT cable to register it

yes I already did a search on google and this forum.

if there were straight answers to my questions then I wouldn't have made this post. instead its a bunch of little girls chattering about whether to register or not, how to replace it yourself (but the battery could blow up). etc. etc.

im looking for a straight answer to my questions. if you don't have a straight answer, don't be lazy and tell me to search. I already did.

thanks for nothing

I believe on can tackle battery replacement as a DIY. I didn't; I paid the dealer $400.

my e93 had an AGM battery which is more expensive, $550, so $400 is still ok :-)
BMW batteries last longer. If you can do DIY, its great otherwise just get it done from dealership or any good local shop to save some money. In my case I was going on a 3000mile road trip and my battery was showing weakness, I just got it replaced proactively.

Is this the first time your battery has been changed? What battery is in it now (what color is the battery?).
A decent battery can be had at autozone. Use the links above to choose the best one based on what your car came with (AGM or not).

If it isn't the first time your battery has been replaced, its possible that your car came with an AGM, and someone stuck a regular wet-cell battery in your car without registering it as a conventional battery (which may be why the new battery didn't last very long).

If you buy the same type of battery as the one thats in your car, and its the first time its been changed, it should still be registered as a new battery with a K+dcan cable and the free BMWlogger software, or at an independant shop with the correct tools.

If you don't know how your car is setup to charge the battery it will have to be coded to use whatever type of battery you choose, again by someone who knows how to code and change the proper settings.

I'm the og owner. 1st battery replacement.

Now Pacific BMW wants $548! GTFO!!

My SA gave me this big long BS marketing pitch about how I need the battery warrantied and I can only trust them, blah blah blah...

Just called LTMW they're gonna do it for $280.

That was the straight answer I was looking for.

I avoid Pacific BMW like the plague. I would recommend going to ANY other dealership in the LA area moving forward.

Really??? I was checking mine and it seemed to be a regular battery. Then the dealer needed to change it out (died in 2 years, 24K miles) and they told me it was a regular battery as well.

If it's a AGM I want to know / make sure so that I set my charger correctly.

Go to South Bay Independent in Torrance. Got mine done for $250, installed and registered. Ironically the battery was from Pacific BMW...

Can you just go to advance autoparts or walmart and get one there?

Hmm...may be LCI vs pre LCI. My SA told me that he will need to check what kind of battery I got, he only confirmed after taking it out.
Mine is 2007 328i e93 and the original battery was still going good at 70k miles (~6 years). I didn't wait for it to die

This also concerns me. Thankfully I have another 3 1/2 years ago until I have to worry

This and my hardtop maintenance out of warranty scares me a bit.
Not worried about the engine stuff- this N55 has been pretty solid so far

Agreed the LMGTFY post wasn't helpful, but I just Googled "How to register BMW battery" and this was the second hit: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=532315.

That should have what you need, assuming you have those apps and the required cable. Otherwise, you'll need some other sort of tool if you want to DIY.

As for aftermarket vs OEM, can't speak to differences, but Interstate seems to be the most popular aftermarket solution overall, though their batteries for my M3 range from 730-790 CCA, whereas OEM is something like 900....
