Biodiesel question from the states

Ok, I'm looking forward to the new diesels coming to the states in 2008 and praying that the 335d will be one of them. My question is pretty unusual and local delearships are clueless. I would like to be able to run B20 or B30 biodiesel (20-30% biofuel mixed with 70-80% diesel) but would first like to know if anyone is currently running this mixture. If anyone is, I would also like to know if BMW would also still covers the engine in the waranty.

it's essentially part biofuel which can be made from recycled oil (vegetable, corn oil, etc.) the primary benefit of this is lower petrol consumption. 20-30% can typically be used on a diesel engine without any additional modifications to the engine and several US manufacturers (GM Dodge Ford) cover this mixture in their engine warranties.

I used Bio in my VW Golf MkIV occasionally when we visited my wifes family in East Yorks. There is a distributor in the UK called Rix.

I don't think you can used Bio in the current Derv units from BMW. My fuel filler cap has a specific Bio Diesel label which is crossed-out, indicating it shouldn't be used. I'm sure there's someone more knowledgeable than me, who knows specifically though......

UK biodiesel is around 5% bio.

There are people experimenting with greater mixes on a commercial basis, but anything more that 5% is seen as a waranty issue and would require some sort of ECU modification.

The USA is well ahead in terms of biofuels and it may well be possible to run higher mixes there.

Since no one I've spoken to with BMWNA or at any dealerships have any idea if biodiesel will be covered to any degree (which I find surprising considering the number people interested in reducing our oil consumption and the sheer amount of leftover cooking oil from fried chicken and french fries) I will probably have to wait up to a year after diesels are available here again before any dealership mechanics know what they are doing.

In the UK 5% is 'safe'. What are other diesels running on in the states?

20% would be about the standard biodiesel for us. 30% would be a bit risky and almost anything over that would require either serious engine work or the use of an old diesel engine (1980s)

In which case I would think itmore than likely that the BMW diesels will do at least B20.

They do already have quite a lot of diesel cars, just not the powerful new generation ones like BMW's

I don't know if it is the same as the UK, but my E92 335D has a BIG CLEAR sticker on the fuel cap saying NO BIODIESEL.

Using 'BIO' over here is a route to warranty rejection......at the moment...

Ethanol will be the next thing.

McDonalds to run vehicles on biodiesel (UK)

and you'd think there would be plenty of used cooking oil in the USA...

I'm pretty sure something in the manual/on the filler cap area says clearly that bio diesel should not be used. EDIT> Doh.. just seen Dave has already made this point

My 330d also has a big label on the filler cap, No Bio. Which did leave me wondering about the long term implications if the govt does raise the bio content in diesel in the future.
