Driven Crazy by CLICKING NOISE :( HELP!
Hey guys, got a problem. Yesterday a weird noise started appearing in the car when I turn the windshield wipers on. There is a clicking noise everytime that the blades go up/down they make a click inside the car. From what I have read, everyone says it is a RELAY issue, my question is, does anyone know where this relay is? and also what kind of relay is it? does anyone have a part number?
Please advise guys because this clicking noise is driving me CRAZY! |

I have a 2011 335i and I can hear a faint click coming from somewhere in the passenger area every time windshield wipers move. AFAIK, this is perfectly normal. Yes, it is the wiper relay clicking. I.e. it is not a relay issue, it is just the relay itself. That's what relays do. They click.
Of course, it your click is abnormally loud, then you might indeed have an issue, but I don't know how loud it is in your case. P.S. Haven't they invented anything better for wiper switching than a mechanical relay already? I hope there are no vacuum tubes in my 2011 car... |

probably the relay as mentioned but if you get bored and want to investigate the mechanical part of it, versus the electronic relay...
pull the the cap off each wiper where it pivots, mark wiper arm position on windshield with painters/masking tape so you know where to put it back later, remove nut that holds each wiper on (under the cap), pull off wiper arms (dont mix left and right), remove microfilter and main windshield cowling beneath, turn on wipers and look/listen for a noise where the motor and linkages are. i had a big leaf trying to get sucked in under the microfilter and i swear it sounded like it was in the car behind the dash, drove me nuts for a week. make sure you put the cowling back on correctly or water will leak between it and your windshield, theres a lip that sort of snaps in across the length of the bottom of the windshield. if you dont want to mess with the cowling or wipers, you could probably just remove the microfilter and listen in the two openings for a clicking noise, then investigate further if it turns out to be mechanical and not the relay.
