I've driven MTs all my life.
I did own a GTI DSG for a few months and that double clutch gear box is where it's at. Having said that, this AT is the best AT I've ever driven ! Shift times are almost as quick and the down shift 'blips' are perfect. It shifts fast, but smooth and downshifts are seemless. The nice thing about it being an AT and driving it in MT mode is: When you drop from say 5th to 3rd, it's not sequential. So, if you do two quick shifts to drop to 3rd, you go right to 3rd. With a TQ Conv. you have all gears ready to go, not just the next in line. And, as most know, the AT is just as quick, if not quicker than the MT. NO worries about missing a shift !! ;- ) Just concentrate on your line, hitting your apex and your gone..... Did you order your e93 with AT ? kj |

Haha. It's not sequential!? I had no idea! A 5-3 gear shift skipping 4th in an automatic? Impressive

had the SMG before
now have the auto tranny with paddles i must say SMG was more manual than this auto tranny or maybe the car has so much power, it does not matter which gear you accelarate in |

How firm would you say the shifts are in the 335i AT compared to the corresponding sequential mode on SMG (S1-S6).

Coming from an 04 SMG M3 the auto transmission in the 3 series is slow, I would compare it to S3 with some shifts maybe entering S4 territory mode on SMG. The SMG was quick and rough...
SMG= manual transmission fitted with hydraulics to operate a clutch and shift patter. 1st to 2nd gear changes along with 3rd to 4th are very quick on SMG 2-3 and 4-5 shifts after a few years of driving the car you will notice they are not as fast as the 1-2 and 3-4 shifts. As for what is better it depends on the users... 99% of my driving was done in rush hour traffic and around town which SMG was the worst POS transmission in the world. But for that 1% o the time I had a stretch of road to go WOT on I will admit I loved it nothing more fun than redlining at 8k RPM in S6 mode feeling like an F1 driver going down the road. Going from driving SMG to the AT is a relaxing break, I love the fact that you can put the AT in sport mode and it does a great job at shifting, SMG had an auto mode but was basically a POS you to make it smooth and livable for passengers and the driver you had to drive in manual mode all the time. But nothing beats the fun of a manual transmission... One of the main advantages of the manual transmission over SMG is being able to disengage the clutch. |

Rev-matching and throttle-blipping are much the same thing. When you're downshifting using a manual transmission, it's a good idea to "blip the throttle" in order to "match the revs". Most folks don't know exactly what RPM the engine will need to be in for the lower gear, which is what true rev-matching would be. By blipping the throttle you're trying to ensure that the revs are high enough so that they can fall to match what's needed for that gear.
Throttle-blipping sounds cool, and unless I'm mistaken my 335i certainly sounds like it is blipping the throttle as I downshift the Steptronic. It may simply be that it's "matching the revs", which will still involve making it rev higher, just like blipping the throttle. If it is truly matching the revs (which wouldn't be surprising for a computer), then it's not wasting any revs in the same way that a human blipping the throttle would... |

more precise at the limit the auto paddles give you power, but the feel of a shift needs to be sharper |
