Buying a used bimmer!

I'm looking at purchasing a 03' BMW 325i from a friend. It has 72000 miles. Looks good. What are your thoughts? Suggestions or things to look for?

Are you looking to replace your '06 330i with the '03 325i or get it as an addition? If you are replacing your '06 330i, I would not recommend it.

2) How much?

3) Daily or weekend use?

4) Maintenance records?

5) Auto or manual?

6) Coffee or tea? lol

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

Honestly having had friends buy a car from me I wouldn't recommend it for the simple fact that if something stupid happens mechanically you get in a pissing match with a friend. If you have seen that he has maintained the car well, treats it well, and have found that you cannot get a better deal (generally you can't if you are getting it from a friend) then things that break would be regular wear and tear or would be on you. Just my opinion (worth about $0)

325i/330i - known for head bolt problems (the head of the bolt snaps off). They are made of aluminum because they go in alumium/magnesium engine block. Iron bolts don't go well with aluminum/magnesium.

I don't think the '03's had the magnesium block (E46). That appeared in the E90.

OP, If the car is in good shape, why not? Do you know the history? I sold my old car to a friend, gave him a good price, and he was happy. Never once came back to me about anything. Then again he new the car, and how to work on the basic stuff.

That said, a car that is 7 years old will probably need a little bit of maintenance, like bushings, water pump, etc. So just know that going in. Don't expect it to be flawless like a new car.
