335i finally ordered... but: doubt on my old 540i...

On saturday i went to order the new 335i coupe, black, cream beige etc. i'm very happy but... listen my (ok...my father's...) 540i, is still a fantastic car, with milage: 33'000... so it's new! bought in 1998 but new as my father drove almost never.... ok for this car they give me 3'000 euros. i think it's an homicide. don't u think? 4.400 cc, 33'000 mileage. they say in europe people prefer diesel and i know. what do u think? do u think for this car they would give me more in the us?

So they're offering just under $4k U.S.D.?

Wow... KBB shows that car around $12k here in the states. Dealers rarely give KBB value, but I would still think you could get $9k here - so $7k EUR.

I would sell that E39 privately then, 3,000 EUR is too low. Try and advertise regionally.

3K is a bit low....but remember, the car is nine years old. People may think that the odometer was turned back and you're trying to rip them off. Besides....after a while, the hoses, belts and wires may be dry rotting based on the condition of the environment, where you parked it, etc. Like everyone else said...go with your own European blue book price and sell it privately.

and for those that don't know...European spec cars get priced a whole lot less than US spec. When I totalled my 330ci here in Germany, the insurance quoted me @ $15K but when I told them it was US Spec, they gave me $24K.

i didn't even think people can think the odometer was turned back. i think honest people can recognize honest people. and people also know that every year u have to take the car to wehre u bought to make it "new" ( i mean tires etc).

damn strong Euro. if it was lower then Dollar i could try to sell it in the us trough e-bay.

yes, i don't like diesel. however it's more simple to sell an used diesel one then an used petrol one (at least in europe). that's the reason why they just give me 3'000 EU

When I purchsed my 335i I also inquired about trading in my 98 540 with 31000 miles. The car is always garaged kept and is absolutly showroom. The dealer offered me $10,000. Needless to say I still have the car.

Most dealers won't give you anything for a trade in, the websites like KBB, NADA and such don't mean anything to dealers, they will always low ball it. To be honest, the dealers don't really want your car so it's always best to sell privately.

Just keep the 540i! You will regret selling it.

I also own a 1997 6 spd. 540i with 105K kms (65K miles). It looks and drives like new! The comfort seats and EDC dampers are great for long distances. Much better that my 330Ci.

In Argentina it is currently worth U$S 35,000.00.

Why sell it if all you can get is 3000 EU? I guess insurance might be an issue. Insurance is VERY expensive in Italy, if I am not mistaken. Parking is generally another. If you are lucky, you have one good garage space.

I would be sad to see a car like that go for so little! But then again in the USA we tend to hold on to so many things we don't really need. Maybe you could find a friend who needs a great car and sell it to him/her for the same price. At least you know somebody who needs or appreciates it is getting a good deal.

Good luck either way!

He's right. Big V8s - especially petrol - have massive depreciation in Europe, because anyone who can afford the fuel & insurance can usually also afford to buy a new car. If it were me, I would keep it and run it into the ground.

very few people in here would like to have this car as it is old... so it is not on fashion... and italy is the land of fashion... i asked friends but they prefer to spend 40'000 for a new (and very slow) 320 d instead of spending a few Eu for a 540i E39

US$3,000 Shipped to Virginia....that's my final offer

Seriously, have you tried advertising car for sale privately, within the region and across the border?

Try the private sale - if no bites you can always take the dealer's offer - but if they offer you 3,000 Euro, it means that they think they can sell it at a profit. You may not be able to get 100% of that profit, but you are likely to be able to get more than 3,000 Euro for it.
