Second coil in 6 months failed today...suggestions?

Coil on cylinder 5 went out about 6 months ago at 52K mi. Car vibrating, shaking, RPM jumping, loss of power. Repaired under CPO.

Today, coil on cylinder 1 went out at 60K mi. Same symptoms. Repaired under CPO.

Anyone else had coil problems and if so, any way to avoid this from happening? Should I swap out the old coils now or just wait until they die one by one?

E90 330i.

Since you are covered under CPO until 100K I wouldn't spend the money. Just let them go and have BMW replace them free of charge.

X2...wait until you're out of warranty to start digging into your own pockets, but once you are, depending on how expensive it is, might be worth the piece of mind

Thats not good news. I had one coil go bad on me 2 weeks ago. I'm Out of warranty, so had to pay for it out of pocket.
Would it make sense to replace them all myself? How complicated is the process?

Car is also a 06 330i with 54K miles.

I doubt you would make any real cost savings by replacing all before they fail. Buy an extra. As prices drop just keep at least 1 spare. Vibration and heat is the killer - not like they have a MTBF.

140k mi here. No coil problems. I've been lucky with the engine. Can't really say that about the rest of the car.

First thing that came to mind when I read this thread was, BMW isn't the only company with coil pack problems.

My 2002 B5 S4, and all the other B5s, used to burn through coil packs like cigarettes.

Talk about a coil pack problem.
