320d Idle

Aright chap's and chapette;s

Got a quick question,

I have a 320d (163) and it runs well aprt from the following, I have noticed at idle it seem to be a bit lumpy, the revs do not move but the car just feels as if it's rocking ever so slightly, you can feel it in the car when your sitting in it. This happened before, I got the BMW customer service guy out to look and he performed a smooth idle test and the injectors were all in spec and nothing was flagged up. Does any body have any idea what this could be? Or has anybody experienced this also?? Was thinking it may be a software update required or something to rectify the issue.

Thanks

Mine vibrates ever so slightly also. Had it looked at a specialist garage and was reassured that it is nothing to worry about. It was also demonstrated to me that they all do that. makes you wonder as to the nvh levels achieved by my 6 year old honda jazz - you have to look at the rev counter to see if it's running at times...

yeah it does that too, but it's just this idle thing that it developed now and again.

this actually happened after a 40 miles run though, but the outside air temp did drop a few degree's when I got home.

Mines similar. I've noticed that when setting off from a standstill when cold it feels like im rubbish at driving. It's like its juddering up the revs. It happens mostly in first gear. When it's warm I don't notice it as much.

My last Diesel car used to rock loads when it was idle, I notice it a few times with the 320d and just put it down to what diesels are like... maybe im mistaken though and the way I drive over time damages my cars lol

I am now assuming that the 320d does this then and it eff all to worry about. I will keep an eye on it and if it gets any worse i will get it in to the dealer and see what they say, probably same as before, 'cant find anything wrong sir'

Righty, I was in another 320d and it doesnt idel like mine. I have called my dealer who have agreed for me to go down and take a run with them to see if I can get the car to idle/shake and let them know my issue. Now, having spoken with a few people who used to deal with BMW's and some currently are (independant though) they have suggested I asked for the following to be checked:

1. Fuel pressure regulation in the fuel rail
2. Fuel pump performance
3. smooth running check
4. MAF readouts

Do you think this is a reasonable request to ask them to do the above?? I have been informed all of the above relates to my problems and may be the cause.

Thanks

If its anything it'll be the mighty MAF sensor. I think about half of the diesel 3 series in this country are running with a faulty MAF sensor heh.

Well I'll tell you if mine has gone or not next month. I'm *certain* it has. And definitely never had a fault on the trip. The car just feels odd.

Its very bouncy on first startup on a cold day. Never worried too much about it.

Also get occasional diesel smell / smoke in cabin, like 1 in 20 to 30 or so startups. Never been able to explain that one.

Well I may have came accross the problem, went out last night and had a good poke around to see if anything was loose or hanging off or leaking fuel anywhere.

Started from the top and worked my way down and found that the fresh air intake that goes into the turbo is working it's way loose and the rubber has no clamp on it which I thought was strange. So Here's hoping that when they put it back on it cures my problem.

Got it in to the dealer yesterday and they put it back on, they say it does not require a clamp as the hose is not pressuised. SO they sorted it and the car still idles like shite.
