Why do you say "it's not something for VW to be proud of"?

Which would you rather own dollar for dollar? Biggest does not equal best. How many years was GM the biggest and what did that get them? Silly North Dakotans.

VW-Porsche has overtaken Toyota as the world's largest automaker, but the stay at the number one spot may be very temporary.
Volkswagen Group, having merged with Porsche, has had an output this year of 4.4 million units, while Toyota has produced 4 million vehicles since January 2009. According to auto industry analysts IHS Global Insight, Volkswagen benefited from programs in Germany, the UK and China meant to spur car sales, while Toyota put the brakes on heavily during the automotive crisis that hit the industry late last year and early in 2009 and cut production substantially, slashing it almost in half from 2.1 million units to 1.1 million. But Toyota is likely not about to cede its title for too long. After the collapse of GM, Toyota became the world's largest automaker, producing 9.24 million units in 2008. It is expected to only make about 7 million for 2009. But the Japanese automaker has a production capacity to manufacture about 10 million vehicles a year, far more than VW-Porsche. It is quite likely that once the crisis has passed, Toyota will once again be number one. source : http://www.worldcarfans.com/10911102...o-1-auto-maker

Don't particularly care as it doesn't really affect what cars come from both companies. Either way, they don't have any good cars anyways cept like 1 each. The GTI.
edit: Still in production |

Depends on what you mean by "good". If you're a bmw brand whore, then nothing any other car company makes will be good. If on the other hand you define "good" by the same definition the average driver/consumer does, then bmw is not as good as toyota. Neither toyota, VW, or even bmw for that matter, gets to their present status in the market place on pure hype. |

Haha no worries I prob took it the wrong way as well. Their creation of the Supra is what keeps me interested around Toyota because they have the capability to make amazing cars! I just wish they would show it more in their lineup..and yea hopefully the ft86 delivers..I just hope it's not a tc replacement...

Yeah - I completely agree that it won't be long before Toyota is again on top; but for the immediate time, VW is on top, why would they not be proud.

Yeah thats true, but as much as I hate the domestics, dont forget that a stock camaro and cobalt ss, beat the 335 around the ring. So cars are starting to handle like bmws, without the cost or problems. Its time bmw go back to being ultimate driving machines and start a campaign of reliability.

Well, Porsche made the first move, but fucked up their timing! VW basically reacted in "self-defense" and took over Porsche instead. War is hell....
As for who is number 1? Just bragging rights really. But sometimes companies do funny things to keep their market share (or build it up), like offering stupid discounts! Oh, and I've said it before. I can find at least one car from just about every manufacturer that I'd own. Some have a lot more than others (like Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, BMW, Audi, etc.)
