Is this something suspension related?
Is it one of those spacer deals they put in your wheels when they ship the car overseas? I heard this noise from my front right wheel the past couple days and finally got around to removing it. This peice was lodged up in there and has ripped that sheathing. Front Right Wheel Well Front Left Wheel Well, There is this same peice lodged up in there, but hasn't ripped that sheathing yet. |

When I picked up my first BMW (2000) the dealer left the spacers in. They should definitely fix it (if those are the spacers) and check the alignment.

Definitely get into the dealerShip & have the other removed. These areinstalled by the factory before shipment. Normally they're removed once they arrive at the dealer.

How long have those things been in there? Prep dealer should be shot.
Might want to consider suggesting they give you a really good deal on a BMW performance suspension to cover up their mistake. I doubt that anything substantive could be damaged by those spacers, but it is at least possible that the damper shaft could get scored. I think they are there to buffer damper internals when car is tied down during shipping -- cranked down to bottom of suspension travel.

So we all agree that this is supposed to be removed from the dealer?
A second opinion, without showing them the piece, said it sounded like it could be a dust protector and commonly break off. Just want to get my facts together before my visit on wednesday. |

The black rubber boot is supposed to be there & over time they will deteriorate to the point of needing to be replaced. They're on there for the same purpose the old cv joints had the boots .... to prevent dust & moisture from getting to the shaft and rusting or allowing dirt to get within the strut housing. I thought within the picture you were showing what looks like a spacer. The boot is a separate issue.

boot versus the shipping spacer
I was changing over to winter wheel set and noticed that both boots are no longer attached to the strut assembly and are just haning up there. I don't see the white piece that you have in your photos.
Are we sure these are shipping pieces and not the plastic piece that is supposed to attach the boot to the top of the strut assembly? I showed it to my dealer today on an impromptu visit and he said he would check into it and give me a call back. |
