Just one exhaust pipe active on 335? Normal?

I filmed my 335 coupe from behind with my camera today for the first time. Put the camera on the ground and started the car up and just revved it calmly a couple of times.

Then looked at the movie and I saw that smoke came out of both pipes immediately when starting up but then directly smoke stopped coming out from the drivers side exhaust and there was only smoke coming out of the passenger side pipe.

Is this normal or should I take it to the dealer service and have then check it out?

Don't think it is on a timer, more like when your RPM goes over 3K it opens the valve and you get exhaust out both sides. There are a few ways to defeat the valve though so that it is open all the time.

No timer, but that is the usual at least for me....... about 15 seconds... You can hear it switch at least with me... not sure about anyone else....

Thanks guys! Feel much better now! Now I only have to fix the scratched paint on the passenger side and I will be 100% prepared for the summer!

I think it only occurs when the engine is cold

I don't know what to tell you! That is not how the system works....

Nope, it is like that all the time... You just don't see the fumes coming out once the engine is warm.

Op, Do a search on the site and there is a way to activate them both :-)

Not sure what you would have to tell me? I was just stating what I saw with my own personal experience, but again thanks for already saying what Paul stated that cleared up the problem. I never go over 3K RPM and.. my exhaust opens up on both sides after start up

I didn't mean timer as a countdown, but from lack of experience it came out that way so that how it seemed to me. I knew for sure for the OP, there wasn't a problem so that's all that matter. Paul just laid out the more technical way, in a mature response.

my r32 does this for two reasons; one to meet and exceed noise restrictions
and the second being to allow back pressure at low RPM's. This prevents
torque loss yet still allows the engine to breathe freely up top. Yes I know
this is my first post and I am comparing apples to oranges but BMW isn't the
only company doing this.
