M240i Preventative Maintenance/ Mods

Hi guys, I’ve recently just acquired myself a 70 plate M240i sat at around 17k miles. Serviced at every 6k miles so has a really good history. I’m planning on owning it for a long stretch of time (with a goal of modifying to get more hp) therefore just wondering if there is anything to look out for and also if I can add anything to make the engine bulletproof before I start adding more power any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I always ask cause it makes no fucking sense lol isnt that just a time frame for when its registered? Can't it be a 21 or something as well?

You dont need to worry about anything as far as preventative yet.. are you planning on just running pump gas or anything else?

I didnt even change spark plugs till I did the turbo. I did need to do injectors as I ended up with a leaky one. Just mod it man.

Charge pipes are prone to failure even at stock boost on the B58

Unrelated but I hate that the B58 has no dipstick I'm sure someone on here has worked out how to fit one though......

Also get your self some gummi pledge (https://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/sonax...-98Jt6C2UmXEpl)

Run this around the driver and passenger windows seals it prevents the window from freezing to the rubber when its really cold outside as the previous owner to my car ragged on the drivers door and damaged the windows regulator mountings slightly (a job which is on my list to do!) Ive already had to adjust the position of it as it wasn't closing correctly..........

Charge pipe is fine on the b58.. its extremely rare to have an issue, like very extremely rare.. im running 28/29psi and have been for 2 years with 30k miles of hard fucking driving with hundreds of races and im on stock charge pipe like everyone else.

Nope, nobody has a dipstick for the b58, or any other of the newer bmw engines since there is no spot on the engine block or oil pan for it..

In the USA as you are located the charge pipe is probably more than ok for your climate as you have said running higher boost.
With the climate we have in the UK fairly cold winters and more recently very hot summers adding to that the roads are very over treated with grit salt in the winter people in the uk running higher boost have had issues with charge pipes splitting and it is a sensible thing to do before running more boost in the UK.

Shame about the dipstick but these engines have more and plastic on them…..
my last BMW E60 530d M57 engine was built so much better in my opinion especially in the engine bay although I don’t think they ever sold that engine setup in the USA it was Europe only, I may be wrong though……

Not sure I've seen a single charge pipe post on here for the B58 but to say UK weather is harsh is a bit of an exaggeration.

The B58 out of the box is set up to last a long time, with or without basic mods. Once you start getting into higher boost and aggressive tunes, you'll run into failures that don't really involve the actual engine. I.E. clutch, fueling, turbo, etc.

The 2 series is also a bit under tyred for the power levels so, LSD would be a great addition.

Well enjoy your stock charge pipe until it lets you down boys it’s coming 😅 plastic goes extremely brittle after lots of heat cycles and at a higher pressure than designed to be ran at & being next to an engine running hotter than it was designed for is called the recipe for a charge pipe to fail in whatever fashion. There’s a reason it’s the first mod people do over here before remapping the ecu. I’ll leave you boys to enjoy your stock pipes 😎 and then you can pay through the roof for parts because of high import tariffs 😅

It gets below 0 and close to 100f where I live buddy.. ive been doing this for years with multiple cars and many over 100k miles.. a b58 charge pipe isnt needed unless its a fluke or youre on crazy boost levels.. but sure, continue to talk shit and talk about how wild that weather is on that island thats barely larger than the state I live in..

Fyi, its the n55 n2x that had the charge pipe issue.. thats the one that breaks on stock boost levels.. the ic on that setup is fixed to the front support and doesnt handle the flex (from engine movement and torque) plus heat cycle, plus boost very well.. the b58 is attached to the turbo outlet and throttle body... and has a center coupler that would handle any flex, even thoigh there isnt any...

Tell everyone here you dont know what youre talking about without telling everyone you dont know what youre talking about..

And if you want a charge pipe, its cheap as hell here.. tarrifs 😆 🤣 again.. youre killing me here with the lack of knowledge

B58 charge pipe failure is a known issue David! A quick search online will prove that as you clearly don't believe me & why so many different kits are available because it is a known issue!
Yes granted not as notorious as the n55 charge pipe however but it still occurs and especially when running higher boost.

My American friend I was talking about the parts you cannot buy from the US!
The OEM BMW parts enjoy paying for them at high dealer mark ups! or paying an import tariff through an online purchase.
In the UK even OEM BMW parts are readily available & are not expensive if you know where to go for them.

And when your charge pipe splits as they usually do remember the British man telling you in your head:I told you so!
