Best N52 oil filter 2023.

Well, it's that time of year again. Some people have said the Mexicans are making the Mann filters now and they are trash. What say you? What is the best filter? Is it still mann, or something so cool I've never even heard about?

So are the Chinese .. buy from somewhere reputable .. knockoff Chinese filters did me find but I use a 5k oci

The latest Mann I got from Rock Auto are back to Germany again. I think for a year or two now.

Regardless of country of origin, Mexico or German, I still buy the brand -- Mann.

My recent Mann filter for our GL was from Bosnia. Couldn't say their factory is any better than a Mexican one, but Miss Sarajevo is a great song. I'm sure Mexico is fine, they make beer and have pyramids. Negra Modelo is the best! Beer, not pyramid. I think worrying about where a piece of folded paper is made may be over-thinking it. Just like beer, enjoy what you've got!

Used German made Mann filters for the longest time without issue. There must've been problems when they moved production to Mexico - my batch of filters from there had gobs of excess glue on the clean side of the filter, all of which came off without any effort (ie would've gone into the engine). Seems like they're back to Germany, but now there are reports of the filter collapsing, which is very odd for an OE filter.

Mann is screwing around in their race to the bottom. Eg the quality of Wix filters have also dropped since Mann's acquisition. I've since switched to Austrian made Mahle filters, which are OE for the E90 M3 and E60 M5, as well as my other vehicles.

Are the Mahle filters all paper or do they have the rubber ends? I do like Austria.

Any reputable manufacturer will enforce certain quality levels, no matter where the item is made.

This is the answer... Look at the iphone or Nike or insert just about anything else. While the narrative is Mexico/China or wherever is not as good. But properly trained and with proper standards anywhere can be of high quality. It's when companies turn to other places to save a nickel that the quality isn't maintained.

(I'm not saying Nike's are the Al Bundy shoes of God but they're consistent and built to the same standard)

I have 421,000 miles on my N52 using only MANN HU-816x filters either from BMW as OE parts or from the HU-816x sold at Advanced Auto Parts. The BMW filters are all German made. The MANN filters in the yellow/green box from Advanced sometimes are sourced from Mexico. BMW builds cars in Mexico, which is why the MANN filters are made in Mexico.

No one cares where a product is made as long as it is priced accordingly and meets specifications. Unfortunately the Mexican made Mann filters that I received were not any cheaper than the German ones, and were also defective to boot. With the recent reports of Mann filters collapsing, it would be odd to continue to use them when Mahle filters are competitively priced and appear to be higher quality (for now). The fact that BMW specified Mahle instead of Mann as the OE filters for the M3 and M5 should mean something too.

A little something I noticed when buying my last Mann filter. On the shelf they had made in Mexico and made in Germany mixed together. Just look on the bottom of the box and it will tell you where it was made.

I don't know if it has any effect, but I recently noticed the Mahle filter had rubber gaskets on the top and bottom contact areas. The Wix I bought had just epoxy coated rings at those points. I cannot remember what the last Mann filter I looked at had.

Went Mahle the last few oil changes, I don't get collapsed filters the way I used with Mann.

I have been experimenting with oil viscosities. During winters I use Castrol Edge 0W40, 5W40 in summer. I live in a harsh cold environment hence the 0W.

Yesterday's oil change was Liqui Moly Engine Flush then Pennzoil Euro LX 0W30 + Liqui Moly MOS2 + Liqui Moly Lifter Additive + Mahle filter + Some leftover Castrol Edge 0W40 (~1L)

Curious to see how this will go. First time flushing engine oil or any oil additives.

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."
