X1 kick to open

I can confirm it's present and it works well. There was a question whether it'd be there, or just a power lift gate that opened only manually. But this was a very pleasant surprise when I took delivery yesterday. Didn't make up for the wrong trim though.

the dealer's demo that I drove didn't seem to have it... the salesperson also couldn't get it to work... got the service guy to try and still nothing... they declared that it didn't come with it.

is there some setting that needs to be turned on? (they did try pretty hard but didn't find it in the menus)

Thanks!

Correct, dealer Demos or the Launch Supply vehicles were built without it.

Check your Vehicle Inquiry Report for option: 32X Delete hands-free tailgate operation. If you have that, then you do not get the kick to open.

so when she places an order for the X1, just verify that the paper work does not have that option(delete hands-free tailgate), right?

thanks!

PSA: don't keep trying to "kick" it open when there's nothing to sense the kicking motion.... you may fall backwards like the salesperson who landed on his [rear end]. while it may have been funny at the time, I just realized how dangerous that can be on a hard surface, especially in winter.

Convenience & Premium Pkg both include 322 Comfort Access keyless entry, so the demo probably didn't have either of these packages.

This is the answer. The HEA vehicles that came from very early production and went to dealers as demo units have 32X, the contactless tailgate removal, even through they have Comfort Access. Newer production units aren’t affected by this.

And my car completed production on Sep. 15.

Some early cars (like mine) were built without it. My build sheet had an option on it (can’t remember the code) but it was something like foot operated tailgate delete. Sales person made sure to point that out to me. It was due to a lack of parts. Not sure if they are through that yet or not.

I'm somewhat ambivalent about this, as I've had bad experiences with mine on my f32 4 series and it opening up randomly, but I'm also happy I shouldn't be having anything deleted on my new car lol. I'd be much more happy with Siri integration so I can just tell my watch to open the hatch as I'm approaching.

won't it be much easier if the rear camera is linked to Face ID? when the car sees you standing in the back with bags or boxes, the tailgate automatically opens.(assuming you have the keyfob, iPhone or the digital on your person) I'm no engineer, but I don't think it can be that hard to implement such a device?

True, but I'd imagine with the current equipment and software, there's no provision for facial recognition. I think the cameras can only detect shapes and movement, nothing complex like a human face. And lets not forget how Samsung botched facial recognition in their earlier phones. People could hold up a printed photo of the phones owner in front of the camera to unlock the phone lol. Definitely need the key fob or phone in the pocket for sure!
