Nostalgia Feelings?

Do you guys ever feel that way, about days gone by?

Yes, we live in a time of technological marvels and advancements, but I often find myself reminiscing about previously decades; for me, at least the 70’s and 80’s. Heck, I even find myself watching shows from those decades just to reminisce and recall that time period.

Anyone else feel the same?

No. I guess I've got too much going on now and recently to take time out to reminisce. However, I too watch M*A*S*H and a couple of shows from the past. Not for reminiscing but for quality programming. Some things hold up and most don't. MASH, for example, for me holds up and is as funny today as it was when the shows were new.

You mean when people actually had interpersonal skills? When you knew how to talk to each other. When people learned conflict resolution at 5 years old after going outside to play and realizing you didn't agree with everyone, and you didn't like everyone but learned how to deal with? When you knew how to disagree in person and how far you could go without getting punched in the face.

Yes, I miss that time.

Yup. Happier (and seemingly simpler) times.

I miss the days where people placed value in themselves and their actions that went beyond how many people "liked" their posts on social media and forums. Sad, shallow, husks of humans is what many have become in the quest to gather as many internet "friends" and "likes" as possible.

I also miss being able to pop the hood on a car and rev it up by pulling the throttle cable. I'm not sure why but I always found that really satisfying for some reason.

I often think back to when the only access to news was the Stars and Stripes and AFN. I barely read S&S and never watched AFN, so politics just wasn't something I knew much about or cared about. Nor did anyone else I knew. That's probably why we were all friends.

I also miss the days when I didn't feel naked because I didn't have a phone with me. If I was out driving or walking back then and you needed to reach me, you might have had a very long wait.

The big one is music, i know every generation likes it's own but jesus H it is dire right now. Absolutely dire. Forget my preferred heavier angle, even basic pop songs are dead. It's all talk singing, fucking Drake and the like. It is abysmal.

Very true. Before mobile phones, I never thought twice about going out or leaving home without one.

Today’s music is generally garbage.

Society has proven itself unprepared for the internet age.

The big thing I don't miss about "the old days" is living almost paycheck to paycheck. I was never destitute, but I had to watch every dime and keep a close eye on my checking account balance so I didn't bounce a check. Those days are long gone, thankfully. As Forrest Gump says, "One less thing."

Is it the internet though or more like smartphones and social media?

I mean I think the internet is amazing and smartphones are not bad on their own either. Do you really want to go back to using maps? Or having to go on mapquest before going anywhere to print your directions?

Personally I think social media is what started the downward spiral and having access to it 24/7 on your smartphone is just the icing on the cake.

I do miss having zero knowledge or care about politics though. Ahhhh 2019... the good ol days.

While I'm pretty happy and content with where I am today, there's definitely a few things I miss about times of past...

1) I wish I had enough money and was old enough to drive "fun" cars from back in the day. These days cars are too clinical. Yeah they perform insanely well, but performance is not necessarily synonymous with fun. People are SO concerned with incremental 0-60 times you'd think at some point manufacturers will just stop including steering wheels since nobody seems to care how a car feels when it's going round a corner.

2) I miss snowflakes not having a voice. The internet is a wonderful thing, but there's some drawbacks, and it's sensitive ass people who can't take a joke that are ruining things. I also miss not dealing with snowflakes in general. I feel like even within my friends there's some snowflakes than before where I have to walk on eggshells.

3) I miss all-night video game sessions with friends... in the same room. Now everything's online so "multi-player" means you're sitting in your room alone playing with people online. Multi-player back in the day meant beating down on your friend who was sitting next to you so you could talk smack to their face.

As a member of the road crew that turned the information dirt road into the information superhighway, I take personal responsibility for the resulting destruction of society.

Oh, and Al Gore didn't help one bit, despite taking credit for inventing the Internet.....

Thats the whole "guns don't kill people. People kill people." argument. The Internet, smartphones, social media, are all just tools and we chose how we use or abuse them. The Internet on its own with no e-mail, no social, no apps, no nothing is like phone lines without telephones. So I do agree with you it's not the internet per-se. I was being lazy in my terminology and using "the internet" as a collective reference for all the digital shit we have these days. No, I dont want my fucking toaster to talk to my smartphone, thank you. And no, I dont want Alexa listening and reminding my fridge to text me that we are almost out of eggs.

I do agree though, the advent of social media and letting people put their entire lives on display was the spark that ignited this dumpster fire.

I guess I just like tech, but hate social media. I grew up watching shows about the future and tech… does anyone remember the show beyond 2000?? Shit! There goes my day into a beyond 2000 youtube rabbit hole!

How about the days when the Discovery channel actual had science stuff on it and TLC was still the learning channel and not a circus sideshow? How about when there were no Aliens on the History channel??

I love tech stuff (for the most part) but social media… I don’t even consider that tech… that’s like some kind of cancer we discovered that was trigged and fed by tech.
