Car won't start after valve cover gasket replacement. Please help!

2017 328xi , Valve cover gasket replaced per instructions. I also changed the spark plugs. After putting all together, the car cranks but won't start. I smell fuel so I'm thinking the problem is electrical or air related. The battery is kind of drained so I tried to jump start it. Same result. I have the following codes on INPA:
2d59
578e
5eba
a10a
a670
e18f
9cbc

Make sure all of your ground cables are secure. I was getting long crank, no start after my VCG change. One of my ground cables to injector/plug harness was not secure.

The fact you have codes says something is not connected. Look up the codes and they will tell you which cable hardness is not connected.

+2 With that many codes, something is not connected.

It is frustrating to go through all of the work replacing a VCG and then no start. Take your time and go over everything.

2d59 DME torque error

578e gearbox oil

5eba SAS error, because you had the batery disconnected right? goes away if you turn the sheel lock to lock.

a10a
a670
e18f all resolve to nothing.

9cbc is an FRM or HVAC error depending on module.

https://bmwfault.codes/

the no engine torque error means the DME is fully expecting the engine to start, so It's not an issue with a sensor shorted or security. It sounds like you've not plugged in something critical, or not grounded something critical. You got the extra ground for the coils on the valve cover right?

I checked again the brown wire that goes into each coil connector. They are all 0 ohms to chassis ground and engine ground. likewise the orange wires in the coil connectors are 0 ohms to 12 V. I disconnected the IBS from the battery as well. I'm about to check the spark in the plugs (again) and maybe the signal on the white wires in the coil connectors (not sure if the voltmeter would indicate anything though). It almost feels like the DME does not trigger the coils for some reason. Any way I can check the crank sensor?

Did you do the valvetronic relearn or reinitialize procedure
before starting the car for the first time?

Try running the valvetronic relearn procedure.

You would be better off with ista for this.

I only did the manual reinstall by turning the motor with the 4mm allen clockwise (motor pulled in) until tension. can you please point to the procedure?

If you look at any of the online DIY's it always mentions that
you need to initialize the valve tronic motor by turning on the car
but not starting it to allow the valvetronic motor to find its stops.

If you tried to start it right of the bat then you probably need to run
the Valve tronic relearn stops procedure in Inpa or Ista D.

From another post

1) Using INPA.
First, you delete the valvetronic adaptation.
Exit the program and switch the car completely off.
Remove the key and let the DME to sleep in for 5 minutes.
Then plug the ignition key back in, and turn ignition on without starting the engine.
If you have luck you will hear how the motor cycling itself.
If not, connect INPA and re-learn the motor under "System -> VVT"
Then switch off ignition once again and let the DME sleep in for 5 Minutes.

Now you should be done and everything should work.

2) Without INPA.
As described above, just turn ignition on without starting the engine. Do not do anything else. After 3-4 seconds the VVT motor will start moving and re-learning its end positions. Let the ignition on for 20 seconds to be sure.
Then switch ignition off, remove the key, close the car, let it sleep in for 5 minutes.

I did the following:
start ignition, let sit for few seconds, stopped ignition, took key out, locked car and let sit for 5 minutes.
tried starting it after and was cranking almost ready to turn but didn't. after few tries, I jumped it from wife's car and it started.... it ran smooth for about a minute and started fluctuating until stopped. tried again, same behavior.
I assume the valvetronic is still not realined?

I got lucky. After stopping and starting one more time, everything runs smooth now. I'll download ista and run the learning just in case. Thank you all for your suggestions

Sounds like the issue was actually fuel system priming.

Glad you're up and running again!

Yeah have to agree, he did not follow the priming procedure. If I remember correctly when i did my VCG they said to turn the car on press the start button without foot on break and do it 3 times.
