"M" identity crisis happening in the Northwest

Particularly in Washington. Many up there seem to have an obsession with putting M badges and stripes on their non-M cars for some odd reason. I've yet to see this phenomenon happen in Portland but constantly see these pics posted on a fb group, PNW BMW.

Give them some credit, at least - I've assumed it's owners like these that gave BMW the brilliant idea to put M-stuff all over our non-M cars.

M-Sport badges and adding an M badge on a non-M car are two totally different things. M-Sport is a package provided by BMW. If any of these owners are on here, please stop the madness. Actually, don't stop because it gives me a good laugh every time I see one pop up in the group.

While I appreciate and sometimes have the same reaction as you to what people who are apparently unable to acquire the real thing do to their cars, I've received similar reactions from long-time (and usually older) BMW owners who look askance at the Motorsport frou-frou BMW chooses to put on our non-Motorsport cars. I just happen to be one of the latter, too.

In the end, I think it's all good.

This has been done to death on the "real" M forums. I honestly don't get too concerned with what others do to their cars, as long as they're road worthy.

This thread is funny because it highlights public's perception of a M car..

To add to it, I've seen worst (or better?):

I don’t really have a problem with M-tricolor stripes on non-M BMWs. Whether it’s M-sport, M-performance, M-Motorsport, or a full-on M model...M is M so put stripes on it if you like ‘em. The badges are distasteful though.

While some of the pictures are seriously funny, it says one thing that, "Imitation is the purest form of flattery."

I have always wondered why some guys on the forum always assume people who put M badges on their cars are trying to deceive others. This attitude is far different from other motor forums such as Piston in UK where majority of posters look at it with nostalgia. People that do this are unlikely to be core BMW enthusiasts because an enthusiast would know others would see through the ruse

There are lot of other reasons people could put M badges on their cars:

1. Because it looks cool (the young adults)

2. A reflection of their aspirations to own M cars in the future

3. It makes their car more attractive to them. The same reasons why people change from non M Sport bumpers to M Sport bumpers on this forum etc

If it makes you happy and you don't care what others think of you. Why not?

Meh. They're not asking you to buy their car.. Some people dress unfashionably too. At least it's not a sea of neutral-colored econo-boxes. Even if it makes you laugh, wince, face-palm, or whatever, it's at least something interesting while you're stuck in traffic.

More 'M cars' for your viewing pleasure..

BTW, I believe the Toyota driver in the video below was being a douche but it illustrates the sentiment towards fake M badges..

I've not seen that in CA. Why is it prevalent up there?

I have no clue. I live in Portland, just 3 hours south of Seattle, and I've never seen it here. It seems to be a Washington thing I guess?
