September 28, 2017

Yesterday, we showed you the first BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe in M235i form (M Performance Model). Today brings the first look at the 228i Gran Coupe.

BMW 235i Gran Coupe

September 27, 2017

Last week, we confirmed the upcoming BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe (F44) for the U.S. market. BMW must have been listening as the first prototype has just been spotted out in testing!

We expect the first ever 2 Series Gran Coupe to come in later 2019 riding on the UKL FWD platform. Therefore, the entry model (228i level) will likely be available in both FWD and AWD xDrive, while the M Performance model (M235i level) should come with xDrive standard and powered by BMW's transverse B48 inline 4 cylinder engine. The prototype spotted here is the M Performance model as it wears blue M Performance brakes, lowered suspension, and M Performance bodywork.

It remains to be seen if an M2 Gran Coupe is in the works to take on the Audi RS3. Thus far, there has been no indication of plans to make UKL-based M models (only M Performance models), but that could always change.

This sounded great until I got to the "FWD". I know that the masses might not care, but I do.

THe only hope is a rear biased AWD... which seems dubious on a FWD platform.

It's nice to finally see pictures. I'm sure we'll get a thread full of groans about it being UKL based (no RWD).

I will try to dig up the old thread where there were some spy shots of some unknown small BMW sedan that it was speculated could be a 2GC. It would be interesting to compare. Edit: found the old article - it was not on BimmerPost. Looking at the pics, they appear to be the 1 Series sedan, not an early test mule for this 2 Series Gran Coupe.

This is the UKL platform. The engine will be a more powerful version of the current B48 engine. I guess a 6 cyl transverse mounted engine is out of question for this platform.

Dear BMW:

Don't make another mistake... this has to available as an M2GC (S55) and would be the hottest hatch EVER.

Mercedes made the jump to FWD / AWD for their entry level car with the CLA some years ago, looks like BMW took notes and is following suit.

Let's just hope they make a CLA45 AMG / Audi RS3 killer

I thought:
40 = B58
35 = N55
30 = B48
20/28 = N20

That applies to the current pre and post lci 2, 3, & 4 series we have in North America at least.

Interesting, look forward to seeing this in the flesh.

Fairly certain the UKL platform was touted (by those in the know on this forum) as being capable of run as RWD. The problem will be the engine size and orientation, and the whole shape of the car; RWD cars have longer arses and the front wheels are further forward than FWD oriented designs.

Well we keep hearing how different M cars are to their base class cars, so if BMW really want to they could make an M2GC, it just won't be anything like the new 2er GC... unless they make it 4 cyl (I presume BMW will never make a 5 cyl) and AWD. But do that and I fear the RS3 will sell even better.

Not happening.

The 2 Series coupe/convertible target market has spoken, and BMW has listened. So those will remain RWD for at least one more generation. At the same time, there is no existing small four/five door BMW customer base, so BMW has chosen UKL for both their existing 1 Series sedan and this new 2 Series Gran Coupe.

One side effect of that choice is that, with two completely disparate vehicle programs which cannot benefit from one another from a development and parts sharing perspective, costs balloon. So, M Division cannot make a case to breathe their magic onto both. The casualty is that, for the foreseeable future, there will be no UKL M vehicles. M Performance (M*35i) is as high as they will go.

I am talking about future vehicles, which this 2 GC is. The past is the past.

The only N55 35i vehicles left in the lineup are the X5 and X6. The former will be gone once the G05 X5 debuts next year. The latter will be gone the year after or sooner if they decide to update it to the B58 first.

Late next year, the X2 ushers in the B48 M35i nameplate. It will propagate to the X1, 1 Series sedan/hatchbacks, this 2 GC, and perhaps even the 2 GT/AT.

I wonder how this will effect RWD coupe 2 series value.

I also wonder how this will affect current 2 series owners. Will some move away from the 2 series just because they don't want to be associated with the cheap FWD?
