An impromptu drive thru Southern Germany...
Bayern, Germany... Last week I asked some friend's if they would be interested in a nice drive thru Southern Germany. I thought it was just gonna be myself and a friend of mine ChrisM135i To both our surprise, we had about nine other cars show up for a little drive thru Bayern. We all know each other thru the years and we had a great day of driving. We drove some of Germany's and Austria's great driver's roads!! I really did not take many pictures... because it was just a bunch of us car guys & gals out for a nice day of touring Bavaria. One of our friends lives in Kufstein and its always great fun driving the small alpine roads there. Plus Kufstein is such a pretty city. Here are photos from our tour. I want to thank: Chris, Florian, Bella, Andreas, Dennis, Markus, Claudia, Johannes, Nader(& friend)... all for coming out(hope I am not forgetting anyone!) and making this day so special. We started out at the BMW Welt... then drove Southwards on the B11 thru Pullach and then down to the famous Tatzelwurm Strasse. The Tatzelwurm makes the Tail of the Dragon seem tame! We entered the Tatzelwurm Strasse in Brannenburg, where we drove a small private toll road(3 euros) thru a single lane tunnel(with traffic in both directions!) and then for coffee and cake for Lunch. We headed for coffee & cake at the famous Cafe Winklstüberl(in Fischbachau, near Miesbach). It just doesn't get any better than the Winklstüberl. But get there around noon or so... bc in the afternoon the tour busses show up and the place is PACKED! Afterwards we headed to Kufstein for some hidden off the beaten path Alpine Roads. We then had a nice dinner at the Tiroler Hof in Kufstein. You also know that the Winklstüberl is a good spot because many people from Munich will drive down there just to pick up a cake for their Saturday or Sunday family get togethers. The place is a national landmark! Or at least it should be. Anyways... here are a few pics and a video that Dennis made. I think Dennis did a great job on his little film. I can't believe he shot the whole thing on his cell phone with a gimbal. Props to him! Enjoy, Dackel Here is the route we drove. Just incase anyone wants to explore this area while on ED. Southern Bavaria from BMW Welt to Tatzelwurm Strasse/Sudelfeld Pass, then to Cafe Winklstüberl then to Kufstein... https://www.google.de/maps/dir/BMW+W...9979!3e0?hl=en lci M2 with a slight decal mod... Spitzingsee... Tiroler Hof in Kufstein... they have the BEST Kalbsschnitzel this side of Vienna!! Kufstein, Austria I couldn't resist stopping by ///M GmbH for a little look-see.

Looks like a hell of a lot of fun.
Weird question, you ever scared of getting your car messed up by migrants/refugees ? or are they no where near those driving areas. Personally am on the fence about a M4 and Euro delivery, but last thing i want is to park my car and have it messed up. That and the safety of the lady, I'm half minded to just pick the car up and hammer it east. |

Germany is so much safer than the states its ridiculous. For the 70 million Germans here, the polizei are only involved in something like 20 shootings per year. And of that only a handful of fatal shootings. IF you are scared to come to Germany... you really ought to see a doctor. This place is very, very safe country. From my understanding of the ED program... any damage that (might)occur to your car(curbed wheels, scratches, etc) will be fixed at the port of entry at one of BMW's PDI centers. You are really missing out if you don't experience an European Delivery at least once in your lifetime. Dackel

Very inspirational
Dackel,
My wife and I will be there late next week in our rental (320d?) car. We're flying to Stuttgart Wed morning 13.9.17, visiting the Schwartzwald for a few days then attending the Stuttgart - Wolfsburg game on Saturday 16.9, then we'll have about 10 days left to just....do whatever.... Plan on mostly taking it easy and taking nice drives likes this one..... Any tips on places to visit further into Austria or possibly Switzerland (no speeding right?)? Interesting places to hike, etc are also of interest. Mostly interested in staying out of the busy tourists areas, we're just going to do AirBnB as we go.... Danke, Chuck |

Yes, DO NOT speed in Switzerland!! They are really quite crazy when it comes to speeding fines. Speed more than +40 kph over the posted limit - and the Swiss will take your car!! Last March I got Blitzed coming out of Geneva doing the posted speed limit of 120 kph! (well... My Navi GPS said I was driving 120 in a 120 kph!) I'm still waiting for that ticket. In Munich, the famous October Fest will be happening. That might be worth a visit. Have you seen this thread of mine? Go thru all the pages... lots of cool places to visit. Places to visit near Munich while on ED... http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1170588 The B500 Hochstraße, from Baden-Baden driving down to Baiersbronn is a cool road. https://www.google.de/maps/dir/Baden...6564!1m0?hl=en Near Baden Baden on the B500 Deutsche Hoch Alpine Strasse, there is a hotel called the: Berghotel Mummelsee. It is quite a nice hotel in the middle of no where. I really enjoyed my stay there a few years back. https://www.google.de/maps/place/Ber....2012081?hl=en But once you've driven it, it doesn't keep pulling me back like Stelvio or Sella Ronda(in Italy). IF you do decide to drive down to Baden-Baden(B500) I would recommend you take a detour to the Fahrzeugmuseum Marxzell. This is one crazy mans obsession in collecting cool old cars and "stuff". The museum has now expand upstairs too! Here is my writeup on the Marzell Museum. http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=790929 The Unimog Museum is also near by the Black Forest area... Unimog Museum - the AWD German wonder machine... http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=819968 But my "tip" is to go visit theMarzell Museum. The roads in that area were quite nice too from what I recall. As far as Austria and Switzerland.... Hahntennjoch, Austria. Its a great little known mountain pass leading into Imst. It's one of my favorite Alpine Passes. From Imst you could drive further South to Stelvio. I really love driving this Italian Pass. On the way from Imst to Stelvio... I would suggest to stay the night in Pfunds, at the Hotel Post. The rooms are really nice and not very expensive and I just love this little village. https://www.google.de/maps/place/Hot....5351913?hl=en I always try to stay at the Post Hotel, half board with dinner and breakfast is like 70 euros. The hotel is quite nice. There is a little hardware store down the road from the hotel that sells real cow bells for the cows. They make great gifts for back home. That shop is close to this pin drop... https://www.google.de/maps/place/Stu....5376404?hl=en Heading further South to Stelvio is the village of Nauders. Just before Nauders is the Nauder Festung(or fortress). Its quite cool to take a few minutes to look at. It was carved into the mountain side - and the main road runs right past it. Its on your Right as you pop out of one of the many tunnels there. Also a few kilometers down the road is Nauders... a small town. In Nauders they also have a small castle(Nauders Schloss) that's kind of interesting. You can stop there and have lunch or dinner. I believe there are also a hotel. IF you don't want to drive to Stelvio... you could also drive to Solden & Timmelsjoch Hochalpenstraße. I like to drive South down Timmelsjoch and into Vipiteno(also called: Sterzing)Italy. This is a nice way to enter the Sella mountain area. Sölden(or Solden) is a very nice ski resort area. Its easy to spend lots of money there. I've never stayed there... just driven thru it and admired the views. Solden is famous for the last few James Bond films for the mountainous chase scenes. Schaffhausen, Switzerland - a cool little town just over the German border into Switzerland. I think the town has something to do with William Tell... bc there are a lot of water fountains of him in this town. The city is also famous for watches and their beautiful water fall. Another idea I have would be to drive from Bayern down into Lake Como. You could also drive some mountain passes IF you want to. ? Or just stick to the main road which is kind of curvy too going down to Lake Como. In Germany just 30 kms from the Austrian border is a small town of: Wangen im Allgäu. I've stayed at a small family run hotel called the Blaue Traube, or the Blue Grape. As you might know... they have some great wines there! And the husband and wife who run the boutique type hotel are very nice. Ask for the "penthouse" sweet in the main building. Hotel Blaue Traube, Zunfthausgasse 10, 88239 Wangen im Allgäu Splügen Pass - might also be a nice detour on the way back North. Maybe a route like this... I also liked this small hotel in Como. Its off the beaten path but the owner is AWESOME and his father can cook some amazing food. I say this honestly that Hotel Giuseppe has some of the very best meals I have eaten in Italy!! https://www.google.de/maps/dir/Hotel...7628!3e0?hl=en Another nice hotel in the Lake Como area is: The Corazziere - Hotel & Restaurant. But its kind of far(~30 min) from the Lake. But they own a small restaurant next door that would be worth the drive one evening. Dress nicely bc it was a "nice" place: Ristorante Il Corazziere Ristorante Il Corazziere https://www.google.de/maps/dir/''/Ri....7704366?hl=en I always love driving the Furka Pass. Its one of my favorite alpine roads. Years ago I stayed at Hotel Glocke and I really like it. It was a very small hotel room... but it was quite charming. And the small alpine homes in this village were quite charming along with the old wooden covered bridge. Hotel Glocke Reckingen Gluringen Goms https://www.google.de/maps/place/Hot....2475138?hl=en Furka Pass was made famous by James Bond in Golden Eye. This was the Alpine Pass that Sean Connery drove in his Aston. As for other Swiss Cities to visit... I really like Lucerne(Luzern). Geneva is also nice. I enjoy the countryside more though. You mentioned hiking... have you thought about visiting Highline 179 in Reutte, Austria. It's a new glass suspension bridge that might be fun. Its down the A7 German Autobahn as you cross into Austria, its near Reutte. There is also a cool castle near by too - that you might want to check out. https://www.google.de/maps/place/hig...10.71765?hl=en Also... Almabtrieb... In this time of year... you could also catch one of those cow parades that is so traditional in Bayern and Tirol. Here is a list of these parades... called: Almabtrieb https://www.bayern.by/almabtrieb-viehscheid-bayern and... https://www.austria.info/de/aktivita...-in-osterreich Hope this helps you plan your adventure! Dackel
