M240i instrumented tested by Car and Driver
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com “The M240i’s greatest achievement is that it doesn’t feel like a compromise next to the M2, but rather makes its own case as a more usable and more comfortable alternative for less money. If you plan to spend many weekends working out at a racetrack, by all means stretch for the M2. If you’re just looking for a lively driving companion for daily commutes and weekend getaways, the M240i is the better M car for that job.” C/D TEST RESULTS: Zero to 60 mph: 4.3 sec Zero to 100 mph: 10.3 sec Zero to 130 mph: 18.3 sec Zero to 150 mph: 27.8 sec Rolling start, 5-60 mph: 5.2 sec Top gear, 30-50 mph: 2.7 sec Top gear, 50-70 mph: 3.1 sec Standing ¼-mile: 12.7 sec @ 111 mph Top speed (governor limited): 155 mph Braking, 70-0 mph: 155 ft Roadholding, 300-ft-dia skidpad: 0.94 g

There is no doubt that the M2 is the more awesome car and what I'd rather have, but the 235/240 may be a little bit more livable for a lot less money.

CD throws down a few gauntlets for the redesign:
"An un-optioned M240i’s interior is a dark, gloomy place that can’t approach the modern feel and specialness of any Audi equipped with that company’s Virtual Cockpit system." A-frakking-MEN. "We do, however, have to protest the unnecessary extra heft these modes dial into the M240i’s electrically assisted power steering ... Steering is accurate and confidence-inspiring if not as communicative as we’d prefer (making the effort higher does not improve feel)." Halle-frakking-LUJAH. Also: if you read between the lines, the review basically says "DCT: Why?" (The newly beefed-up ZF8 auto is that good). No mention of the stereo -- which, it's worth mentioning, seems to be somewhat 'fixed' for 2017 based on feedback on the M2 forums. Maybe BMW finally corrected the wiring issue that created the out-of-phase condition in the rear speakers? I think the next-gen M2 will be an absolute beast slayer in its segment. It will have to be ... and I personally think it has a very good chance (But not as good of a chance as the M4) of being a hybrid.

Pretty dang quick and about what I expected. 12.7@111mph. C&D tends to kick out the strong mag test numbers, but either way, the M240 and that B58 teamed with the 8AT is no slouch. It would take my M235 6MT a Stage 1 tune to match the stock numbers of that M240 8AT.

Weird that they are calling it an "M car". Wouldn't really qualify it as a true M car like the M2 / M3 / etc.
Good review though, nice to read some feedback on the refreshed model. |

Agree about the base interior, but I got the Estoril Blue exterior and Coral Red interior and it turned a lot of heads of all ages and genders
From my European delivery experience, I'd agree with everything in this review except I really like the steering in both comfort and sport. Although this is coming from daily driving a pretty low-power-steering E46 with lowered springs and new swaybar endlinks. Going with something other than black makes it feel a lot roomier inside. |

One bone that I'd pick is their assertion of the "M240i undercutting the M2 by $8245." In fact the real-world difference is typically going to be at least $3000 more than that, as M2 buyers are paying full MSRP (if they're lucky) while M240 buyers can expect at least a few thousand off MSRP. In any case, it sounds like the M240 is a strong candidate for C&D's 10 Best list, following the M235's achievement the last two years. It'll be interesting to see if they include the M2 on that list in a joint M240/M2 entry, or even a combined award for the entire 2-series 230/M240/M2. It's always kind of puzzled me that the 228i was omitted from the C&D 10, as it's not a fundamentally different car than the M235i (just less engine and less standard equipment). |

One thing I noted on their test sheet was when going 70 MPH the speedometer said 72. This confirms my suspicion on that as well as other things I have read about BMW's speedo's reading high. Pat |

If you option out the M240i to match the features of the M2 they end up being the same price. Although you can probably get much better deals on the M240i to drop the price a bit.

So both 2014 M235i and 2017 M240i in Auto have the same 0-60 at 4.3 sec. as tested by Car and Driver. Hmmmm.

I'm still trying to choose between the M240 and 440 for my next car and this review did not make my decision any easier

Oh, undoubtedly true. Even taking equipment differences into account, though, the bottom line is that your typical M240i buyer is going to be paying mid-to-upper $40s after discounts while your typical M2 buyer is going to be paying mid-to-upper $50s (with no discounts).

I discovered this forum after I decided to get an M240i this past summer. I came here hoping to find ideas for cosmetic mods that would give the car some cool but subtle style changes. I found that and more. It's been great.
Anywho, my car was delivered to my doorstep this past Saturday and I drove it for the first time today. I am completely blown away by how great it is. I'm no car expert at all and I'm coming from what I thought was a pretty cool Lexus 350 F Sport, but if there are people out there like me - people just looking for a fun car to drive to the gym, to the store, out to dinner, etc - you will have a blast in an M240. It's on another level. I'm truly impressed at how bad ass the car is and I suspect I will be getting a couple of speeding tickets over the next few months. Also, if there's anyone debating the Mineral Grey color, it's so dope on the car. Photos do not do that color justice. tl;dr - Incredible car with incredible feel, quick as a wink, roomie enough in back for average sized humans. And it seems to be a head turner. At least where I was driving it today. |

I'm looking to replace my 128 next spring, and I was debating between the 230 and the 240. I've kind of been leaning towards the 240, and this kind of nudges me a little more in that direction. I don't plan to go to a track, but I do like to drive the back roads in my area. The 240 seems well-suited for that.
I would like that the interior not be tomb-like, so I am debating Coral Red, to go with Mineral White or Alpine White. |
