Exhaust opening up after 550 miles
I noticed this on the Performance Exhaust on my E92 as well, but it seems the exhaust on my M235i has a bit more growl now that I have 550 miles on the clock.
I notice at idle a nice little rumble and when I put the pedal down, things really start to sound amazing. Has anyone else noticed this? |

I couldn't tell what was real and what was digital. Either way, it sounds amazing in the cabin. I had people watch the video of me doing a lap on the Nürburgring and everyone loved how the car sounded. I didn't have the heart to tell them that a lot of that was fake. hahaha

Have you driven it in an enclosed parking lot yet? I am curious how it sounds compared to my 335is. I often put it in manual mode and push the gas while going down the ramp, then letting off the gas completely so that it coasts and burbles on the way down.

I tend to notice the burble whenever the car downshifts quickly. Best example, a bit of hooligan light to light sprinting yields the sound when slamming the breaks.

Yes, I do this every day in my office multi level car park. Certainly louder and more pops and burbles now at over 1,000 miles.

You know, I really don't think very much of the engine noise is due to active sound. I read somewhere that a BMW engineer said active sound is responsible for about 3% of the sound you hear in the cabin.
In any event, I've screwed with the exhaust (stock) on my M235i in my office parking lot (underground) and the overrun sounds pretty cool. Also, I've taken it out for 4 track days so far, and I've been told (from spectators) that it sounds really great on WOT - very sporty/aggressive sounding, and I was sharing the track with some ZR1 C6 Corvettes with 640 horsepower. Straight sixes sound cool by their nature, and this (relatively high performance) one sounds even better with the stock (or even M-Perfornance) exhaust, which if you recall, was specifically tuned for the car. |

I have 2 BMW's with Performance exhaust and several without and I will tell you I think BMW does a great job "tuning" the sound! Both my new M235i and my 2008 328it have performance exhaust and I love the sound. Not too loud but great tone. The guys at VIR working the pits loved the sound of 328it as I pull onto track.
Even when compared to my 1M with the stock quad exhaust, the M235 sounds better and that is with only 500 miles on it. I hope it opens up a bit more!

I still think the MPE is not loud enough...or maybe Im driving too fast and that the sound is way behind

Just wondering how mucb does it cost to have the performance exhaust installed?
I did called SunsMotor according to an old post and got a very good pricing. Now the problem is having it installed. I'm in DC area and quoted 3 hour for $420 for the installation. Is this reasonable? Can anyone please suggest a dealership around to get the job done? Thanks! |

Should take 1/2 hour (charge 1 hour) I went to a exhaust shop and cost $120...my E90 was done at a cheaper shop and cost $50. I live in Boston area so cost should be higher or around the same rate as you

I paid $1200 for parts, labor and tax when I had my E9X PE installed.
I'm waiting to see how the sound evolves over the next few months before I go down that route again particularly since this is a lease. |

I was told that it has to be installed at a bmw dealership, otherwise I would void the warranty. Is this the case?

Void what warranty? The muffler warranty? I doubt you'll ever need to warranty an axle back system. If they were talking about drivetrain warranty, that's completely ridiculous.

I saw the new thread today on the new Eisenmann exhaust with quad pipes. Wow! What a look, what a sound! Though it made me tingle thinking about having that on my car for the open road/track days, it's a bit burly for the day to day and could get tiresome on road trips. I've got the MPE on my M235i and I love it. Totally docile in eco/comfort and non-droney when on the freeway. Can sneak it into the driveway late at night without waking the wife and answering a lot of questions. But it's got a completely linear sound when in Sport/Sport+ where the more gas you give, the more snarl you get. I've also had a buddy do a couple passes by me, both under hard acceleration and at high speed. It sounds awesome. It reminds me of a weightlifter wearing a tuxedo. Looks like a gentleman on the outside, but you can tell that you don't want to mess with it. |
