2015 M235i top speed question
Greetings to all Bimmer fans,
can someone tell me if the 2015 M235i comes w/ an option to remove the top speed limiter ? For example, on the 135i w/ the M-package, the limiter is disabled since the car comes w/ summer tires. Is this the case also for the 2015 M235i ? The official spec shows top speed at 130 mph. Thank you in advance for any information on the subject. |

AFAIK, there is no option to remove the top speed limiter on 2-series cars.
RWD cars should come with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, which carry a "Y" (186 mph) speed rating and increase the top speed limiter setting to 155 mph. AWD cars come with runflat tires which results in a top speed limiter set to 130 mph. -K. Last edited by khaug; 11-03-2014 at 01:18 AM.. |

155 It's coding that removes it. Otherwise it exists. |

It's a software limiter. I.E., someone with a laptop, the right connector, and the know how can remove it in seconds. However, you void your warranty that way. But maybe you could undo the change before taking it for service....although there should be some record of that in the logs.
I have taken my 2014 M235i to its software limiter induced maximum speed (155 mph) on the autobahn. I can't imagine someone in the U.S. ever doing that on any public road. Once I get past 130 I get scared :P (because one of those cars in the right lane can swerve in front of me and kill me). I've got about 8,000 miles on the car, probably half highway driving on the autobahn and I only occasionally take it over 140. However, being limited at 130 would be a problem because I do often exceed that speed. Last edited by yep; 11-09-2014 at 03:37 AM.. |

The top speed shouldn't be an issue in the US unless you plan on tracking the car. On a decent straight the 135i can easily go over 130 MPH, even at Summit Point in WV. Other than that I can't imagine going over 130 on a US public road.

Even on track, going over 155 seriously compromises the aerodynamics of the car and it's very scary and unpredictable at that speed. The hood starts shaking and buckling and the car starts to float. One wrong bump in the road surface or flick of the steering wheel and you're toast. These cars aren't wedges like a Lambo or Ferrari. They're shaped like toasters.

Not sure which tracks in the U.S. are big enough where you can exceed 155. I've been to Watkins Glen twice, which is a fairly big track at 3.5 miles, and got my Mustang GT up to 130 mph before needing to brake. One of the instructors had a 2011 M3, and he got that to 140 mph. An M235i is not going to come close to 155 at Watkins Glen, from what I've seen.

At 145 plus the car is fine, wind and engine noise but the car is solid, no hood shake. As far as handling, M235 in some ways better then the rear or mid-engine cars, M235 like a dart or cheetah with it's weight up front. Surprisingly lots of the mid engine cars have mediocre drag and frontal area numbers. Seems the shortish wheelbase high riding M235 characteristics are more apparent at high speed, but think about this, would BMW offer a 155 top speed if the high-speed characteristics deteriorated so badly over 150? |

I did European delivery both on my '08 135 and on the my M235 that should be showing up next week. While I didn't get many opportunities to top out the M235 this trip due to heavy traffic on the unlimited sections of the Autobahn I was on, the M235 handles much more stable and confident than the 135 did. If you hit the slightest ripple in the pavement in the 135 the front end would feel very light. I never felt that in the M235. That said, I won't ever get close to it in the US. On the front straight at Portland International Raceway I expect I might be able to get 130 best case.

Right about RWD and AWD. Just to clarify, Top Speed limit has nothing to do with RFT. In Canada you can get high performance RFT (Potenza's) with high top speed limit (Option 840) You can also get Michelin PSS non-RFT with high top speed limit. Both no cost option.
