Automatic wipers - not automatic?
In previous cars I have had, automatic rain sensig wipers were set and forget. I noticed in the rain today my wipers didn't start wiping on their own. Pressed the auto button, the green LED came on, and the did a swipe. Fine. But I came back out to the car and when I started it the green LED was off again.
Do the "automatic" wipers have to be manually turned on every time it rains? Seems to defeat the point.

This is normal to me. My old Z4 did the same thing. Once you turn off the car it resets and must be turned back on to go back on automatically.

This was normal on my old Volvo too and while it's not as convenient as I'd like, I think it makes sense, especially from a liability standpoint. I remember always seeing those carwash signs that say turn off your wipers, etc. Well if you had them on auto and they started doing their thing in a carwash (not that you should ever take your nice car through an auto bay) there could be damage and stuff.

It's a good feature that limits random wipes due to sensor errors. If it's raining turn on the system.

Seems utterly pointless. Is there a way to change this with coding?

If you think running your wipers dry randomly is a good idea...

my previous cars with rain sensing wipers had sensors good enough for that not to be an issue...

Yes it can be coded. I like it always on, I have come around a corner to find sprinklers spraying right at me, and when they come on when you need them most, it's a magically solution you dont want taken away from you. I think it drains power more, or people complained, otherwise its strange BMW changed the coding.

The stealership can code shit for added cost if you ask them. Otherwise you will have to buy an OB2 Adaptor [paid less then 20 for mine] and the correct app for your [iPhone, Droid, whatever] series car, or when once available.

I actually prefer the BMW method. I know the auto wipers in Lexus do that where they come on when rain is sensed but I hate having to remember to shut it off when going through car washes and if I ever went through a car wash where nobody was in the car they would go crazy.
IMO each method is a little flawed so I will take the manual set option. |
