Thanks...

Got the film here http://www.metrorestyling.com/Smoke-...-p/smkfilm.htm
got the $0.99 samples for light and dark and then ordered 2ftx3ft... for $20 + shipping

The dark one was too much but the light smoke is just perfect in my opinion

Actually yes... Install was kind of a pain... you need somebody to help you with a heat gun... so you can stretch the film while you heat it up...

trick is stretching... even if you get wrinkles, you pull the film off, heat up and stretch and wrinkles disappear....

I just had fun doing it... and learning....

I wonder how that would look on a black car? I suppose I could get my wife to photoshop a pic of my car and tint the taillights for me. Hmmm....

Just curious anyone have an idea what a shop would charge for this?

I asked where I tinted my windows and they said around 140 bucks.. so did it for $28 and saved $100

The other option was to get them painted but didn't want that permanent of a solution

Wow that's about double what I would have guessed. Crazy.

Ya seemed high to me too... this shop does only window tinting so they are not very familiar with tailights maybe that's why they quoted higher

Cool, temporary blacklines. I would've preferred just a touch lighter. Dark or spray tint is rice and tinted lens covers from the 80s are just douchey.

only thing else i ordered was the 4.99 felt edge squeege....

requited stuff is on the product link too:

1 Quart Spray Bottle
Heat Gun or Hair Dryer
Bottle Soapy Water
Squeegee
XActo Knife

already had spray bottle and heat gun and just used some hand wash.
Trick is too clean the lens well so that there is no dust on it, then spray soapy water on the lens try not to spray too close to avoid dripping, then put the film and start heating and stretch

if you get wrinkles, just pull the film off till where the wrinkle starts and heat and stretch (it's easier if you have somebody's help so one can heat while stretching). Most wrinkles occur at the edge of the lens.
The key is to stretch wrinkle to the sides and then push the film onto the lens while stretching so that it sticks flat to the lens

Also don't cut the film till you are done with all the wrinkles and it's perfectly positioned on the lens else you will not have enough film to pull from to stretch. Once it's perfect leave around 1/4 inch extra film and push it in wrapping the lens

Hope it helps.... might sound hard but it's was nice to do it myself... not so much hard but frustrating at times.... worst case you pull the film off and start over.... maybe order some extra length for another light just in case..

Sounds great. Thanks for all the info. Wasn't planning on doing this on this car like I did on my 1er but this light film gives the appearance of black lines which we don't have on this car which I love. May have this done in a few weeks me I'll post a pic.
