Clutch Slip with BM3 and M240i/M235i 6MT Owners?
Hello everyone!
After leasing my M240i 6 M/T for 3 years, I bit the bullet and purchased the car. Meaning a week later, I flashed my car with BM3 OTS Stage 1. I simply have an AWE Touring Exhaust with Non-Resonated Performance Mid Pipes along with a BMS Intake. Now I must say, the power gains and experience are well worth the money! However, at 23K miles(I had my transmission and clutch replaced at 12K Miles. Broken gear fork), I do fear that the torque threshold on the OEM clutch is already being exceeded simply at Stage 1 running 91 and 93 Octane maps. Just wondering how others with manual transmissions fared before upgrading clutches? BTW: I will write a full review on the tune shortly. Far to few manual owners discussing their experience with flash tunes in general. For one, I love the increased throttle response(virtually no lag), however already dislike Sport + touchy throttle when achieving smooth gear shifts. It's become even more difficult, perhaps will take some time getting used to? Mind you, with DSC Off(most natural throttle response IMO) it is perfect and even easier to rev match than with the OEM MMPSK tune.

Interested in hearing more about this before I tune my 6 speed. Is there anything besides the clutch that would need to be upgraded for the transmission to handle the additional stress?

Currently @ Stage 2 on BM3.
Had Dinan Elite on the car till about a month ago. Car currently has 60,000 miles - I bought new in 2017. Transmission fluid change every 30,000 miles, differential same. No clutch slip issues so far.

That's reassuring to hear, especially considering stage 2! Thanks for the feedback! Have you experienced any rev hang per chance? Generally when shifting quickly at higher rpms. All in all, I do love the car in DSC Off and Comfort in terms of throttle feel when running BM3 Stage 1 91. Although, the throttle modulation seems a bit touchy or hypersensitive in Sport +(already is a bit unnatural in stock form ), so it makes shifting less predictable for me at least.

Hi,
I haven't noticed any rev hang -will pay closer attention. I don't drive in Sport+ much as it's too twitchy - even in stock..I typically drive with the TCS off, throttle is much more natural and easier to modulate. Quote:

Exactly! Love the throttle modulation in DSC Off/TCS Off. I've actually been driving with traction off all this week, love rev matching downshifts myself, not auto rev match as the case in all other driving modes

I've got about 30k miles on my M235i Stage 2 tuned, car has 70k miles total. Still on the original clutch with no slipping. I do live at altitude so the car isn't make the same power as sea level folks. I'm surprised the B58 tune is slipping yours already. Might have to upgrade to the 550i/335is clutch.

most tuners and modders don't have to upgrade the clutch on an MT. there's a few threads that have max torque of stock clutches etc.
I've got a 15 228i with jb4, catless dp, 93 gas, CDV delete. I'll tell you that I 'can' slip the clutch if I want to. super high rpm and dump the clutch in 3rd gear, yeah it probably doesn't catch. under normal conditions and normal shift, no issues. I also assume that this is more likely after CDV delete and less likely before it. 2¢ |

Sorry to revive the thread but, since we're two years down the road, I wanted to see if any issues have arrived now that 100k+ mile tuned B58s may be out there.
I'm looking at a few options, mostly used Dinantronics and BM3 tunes. I'm planning on a stage 1 tune with an exhaust, and I have a 3.46 diff on the way. However, my car has crossed into the latter half of 100,000 miles and I want the clutch to last for years to come. Am I better off keeping the engine stock and focusing on other aspects? |

I don't know how to evaluate the potential effect of the diff's gearing change. I'd guess that at most it too won't make much difference to the life of your clutch. I think how you drive the car and use the clutch will have the most to do with its eventual lifespan.

All things being equal ehanging the final drive will have no effect on clutch longevity, the way you drive is what affects the clutch. If anything a numerically higher final drive will get the car rolling faster - so less clutch slip on take off.

It held up just fine on the E30 OTS tune but then again the B58 will make more torque and power throughout equivalent tunes and I am relatively lower mileage.

Getting drivetrain malfunction - is that clutch slip?
Feels like it slips in Sport or sport plus 3 or 4 gear highway full throttle over 4k
rpm '17 240 BMS1, Mperformance LSD, intake/exhaust

2017 M240 27 k miles. Bm3 stage 2. 6spd m. Mper LSD. 8 track events no slipping bm3 Logs show it is making 18.5 psi
I have used torque reduction table feature in bm3 for gears 1 and 2 No drag racing or burnouts or roll racing or using lag feature on multi map |

Who has replaced stock clutch/FW with 550i clutch ?
I'm getting Drivetrain Malfunction pretty frequently (just about every time) I give the car 100% throttle in 4/5/6th on the highway and I can feel a slip hesitation...I want to replace the clutch and flywheel...
Stock clutch obviously does not have enough grip...so what are the options ? 550i clutch? Performance clutch. Seems like people have done this can you please help? Where do you get the parts; how do you know what to get, how do you know they are correct?

It's literally the clutch from the F10 550i and coincidentally E92 335is as well.
21207603248 You'll probably want all the other supporting parts. https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=21_0227 https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=21_0227 LUK is the OEM for it I believe.. the flywheel is where the real cost is.
