Oil Filter Housing Gasket replacement

  1. When did yours start to have leaks? Mine is 42K miles and I'm considering doing a preventive replacement rather than having to do a painful cleanup after oil splatters everywhere.
  2. And, I don't see TurnersSports selling the long-life Viton version for the F22.

Thoughts?

I was thinking about this too. It's weird how it doesnt seem common on the 2 series forums as much as the 3. Doesnt the m3 also use the ohfg setup?

I've been on this forum for 4 years now. I can't recall someone reporting that they had one leak. I'm sure they do but perhaps the better oil cooling system on the M235 helps extend the gasket life.

I wouldn't bother replacing it until it leaks. I check under the hood at least once every 2 weeks and this is an area I inspect. It will weep first and then leak slowly. The biggest risk is letting it go for too long and the oil gets on the accessory belt, the belt slips off, and gets pulled into the oil pan. Such a weird freaking issue.

Mine leaked on my 135 at 100k. That being said, don't fix things that aren't broken, you could unintentionally make a problem.

Looks like some of the ongoing E46 issues have been ironed out and they are showing up much later for the F22's. That's good to know.

But was it leaking? We're not being "ignorant", but there's no sense in replacing it until it does start leaking.

Maybe I'm thinking of something else, but don't you replace it with every oil filter install?

The large black oring around the bottom of the oil filter housing?

So far every oil filter that I've bought comes with a small green o ring and a large black one for the filter housing. I've replace both every oil change?

No, you're talking about the external gasket.
The one we are talking about is the internal gasket where the oil filter housing interfaces with the engine.

Might started leaking slightly at 65,000km and the dealer replaced it at the end of warranty. They said it's inevitable that they all start leaking so might as well replace while it's free.

Yes mine was leaking. You need to be careful with these engines. If the oil leaks onto the belt there is a chance the belt will slip back behind the crank seal and lock up your engine. May as likely as the N54 but there is still the chance.

Any how to guides on this, mostly for the torque specs lol? Im planning on doing this preventatively. It's a common issue, the gaskets are cheap. I'm all about preventative maintenance. Im just under 70k but it is about 5 yrs old now. I think you can also end up with coolant in the oil if the oil cooler gasket leaks?

If anyone's done this, did you also change all the bolts and pressure sensor? Or just the gaskets?

Unlike E46fanatics, where there was a hoard of people working their cars, the F22 does not attract a lot of people to work on their cars much.

Either that or the F22 DIYers do not go to forums much.

Or we are in a wrong forum. I have not found an active DIYer for F22 that is similar to the E46fanatics.

I don't understand why you'd replace before it's leaking though. It typically doesn't fail catastrophically. The big issue is people that never pop the hood routinely and inspect for leaks. A bad longterm leak at the OFHG can get on the accessory belts and result in the belt slipping off the pulleys and getting sucked through the seal behind the crank pulley.

I wouldn't replace preemptively, people have had coolant oil contamination issues that resulted in spun rod bearings right after replacing this gasket.

it's the lifecycle of a BMW forum (or any car forum). e46f is old now. F chassis are still new(ish).

This Logic is Crazy IMO - Replace at 75K as Maint Item

1. The (2) gaskets starts to leak allowing Coolant to mix with oil
2. This process can occur and NO oil or coolant is leaked externally
3. Your car suffers from coolant / oil mixing
4. Eventually the gaskets are so bad that they leak externally and are replaced
5. Internal engine problems have already occurred but now you blame issues on
the act of replacing the gaskets.

IMO I believe that 75K Replacement is good preventive maintenance plan or when a leak is observed or by checking coolant tank of presence of oil contamination & then replacing. For a Stage II and up this maintenance could be increased every 50K due to heat related issues. Just my 2.

Mine has been replaced by the dealer before warranty was up.
