Wiper blade routine
going through the manual, it gives a rather extensive set of procedures to raise the wiper blades to change or for snow. I've seen how in the past, this procedure was needed to clear the hood but it looks like on the 2's, they clear the hood edge (just).
Is it safe to say that the procedure would not be required? or will raising it in the horizontal position somehow damage the wiper arm mechanism or something? |

From the owner's manual :
Fold-out position of the wipers Required when changing the wiper blades or under frosty conditions, for example. 1. Switch the ignition on and off again. 2. Under frosty conditions, ensure that the wiper blades are not frozen onto the windshield. 3. Press the wiper lever up beyond the point of resistance and hold it for approx. 3 seconds, until the wiper remains in a nearly vertical position. After the wipers are folded back down, the wiper system must be reactivated. Fold the wipers back down Before switching the ignition on, fold the wipers back down to the windshield; otherwise, the wipers may become damaged when they are switched on. 1. Switch on the ignition. 2. Press the wiper levers down. The wipers move to their resting position and are ready for operation. |

The other day I raised and lowered my wipers to clean the windshield just as I had done with any other wipers during my lifetime and I was able to accomplish this feat without following these instructions and without incident.

In my X3, the wipers don't clear the hood unless you follow this procedure. You can end up scraping the paint off the back edge of the hood. Doesn't seem to be in an issue with the 2, though.

I have owned 4 BMW's including my current 135i and have never had to do any procedure to lift the wiper arms. The only car which I owned that needed such a procedure was an Audi A5. BMW is well on its way to becoming an Audi clone.

On my previous F30 you couldn't just lift the wipers up. It was fixed. You had to do some procedure to lift it up. In my F22 I realised that you can just lift it up!
