Feedback on reliability of each model
I used to have 3 other bmw's before this (330ci e46, e92 328i, e92 335i) and the first two were overall not too bad with maintenance costs as i did most myself... i did most myself for the 335i but that car with the n54 was a complete utter disaster for maintenance. Just about everything broke down on it. Then i sold it finally. I love bmw but think i got a bad apple with the 335i and like the 235i and 240i.. from what i saw the b58 is a closed block motor built pretty solid. fuel issues from the 335i seem to be fixed and improved. This would probably be a daily light driver as my 2017 is used for my home flipping travels most of the time. I like working on my own car however having coverage like warranty wouldn't hurt. What's your guys' feedback and experience between the problems so far on these cars? Seems to be minimal though most for sale i see haven't gone much over 50k usually.
Thanks guys! |

My M240i has been good through 2.5 years and 36K miles, including the first 1500 miles in Germany and the Czech Republic. Only issue so far was a rattle from the exhaust flap that was replaced under warranty. I have done all maintenance except the second and fourth oil changes which were part of the 'free' maintenance. I plan to keep this car for a long time so I am following old school maintenance schedules.

Just drove mine 4k kms across Canada. Now has 65k kms, been tuned since 15k kms (JB4) and no issues whatsoever with the powertrain. Otherwise no issues that pose any concern for long term ownership.
I did my homework on the F platform cars, their modules, specifically the N55 engine in the m235, and it's a keeper imo. Such a strong stout linear i6 with smooth NA type of characteristics (hard to find in modern FI cars). My fuel consumption has also been getting better, so I think the engine is finally at it's "broken" in stage, and I'm seeing 10-2-% better economy all around. When I looked for the "next car" it had to have the following: 6cyl turbo/supercharged engine manual + LSD coupe German bloodline Not much else out there in this price range, that's for sure. It's basically BMW or P-car, for those wants/needs.

My last BMW was a E92 335xi with the N55 and was perfect until the water pump went at 80K, followed by the battery, and then a $1600.00 transmission repair. I traded in in at 90K for my current M240i with the B58 (4K miles and perfect). A BMW friend recently advised that today's parts are engineered to last about 75K miles and to sell before then if I can afford it. Already planning to sell the M240i at 30K and pick up a M2 Competition still under warranty...but not sure I can afford replacing my car along the same schedule as my smart phone.

Currently have a 2016 228i M-Sport convertible, one issue with tail light bulb housing (replaced under warranty at no cost). Replacing runflats this weekend with non-rft tires at 24K miles. Previous 2013 335i with N55 had faulty aux cooling radiator fan (warranty, no cost) and cracked charge pipe out of warranty, replaced it myself with metal unit for cost of part and an hour of my time. Battery needed replacing on the 335i after 5 1/2 years of service. Current 2015 M3 (purchased as pre-owned a year ago) had a rear axle/diff seal replaced under warranty; no other issues.

I'm at 37K miles on my 16 M235i convertible. No issues - just lots of miles with smiles, especially with the top down. LOVE LOVE LOVE this car.

32 months, 66k miles. The only issue so far has been an exhaust spring clip, which is a $10 part that I replaced myself. Funny thing is, because it fell off in the winter, I couldn't hear the rattle since I had the windows up. A guy in my parking garage pointed it out to me.

Individual data points are useless in this sort of query! If you really want to know about reliability, look at the Consumer Reports annual set of data on all models.

'15 228i Conv that I bought as a CPO last year, and it has 25k miles on it now. I just drove it 5,300 miles round trip from here in San Diego to Ohio and back, and I've not had one problem with it.
