New owner ripped off by dealer

Hey guys just swapped over from 335 msport.

Bought car in New Jersey after work Friday night and drove straight home to DC. Long day.

About halfway there I started getting all kinds of right rear light warnings pop on.

Is this hardware or software related?

Dealer told me "it was fine at time or purchase" 2 hours before the lights popped on.

Probably a ground wire short in the right rear light assembly.

So is this better or worse than the tail light itself?

What's the estimated repair cost?

Thanks

If it's the taillight, you can pickup used 235 ones off ebay for about $100

Send it in and get it repaired.
Tell us what the story is after repair.

Unless it's a recurring issue, why is it a rip-off if it's under warranty?

I bought my CPO M235xi and within a month, I found problems and got them fixed one by one.

I bought a car that was promised in perfect working order and 2 hours later it was abundantly clear it is not in perfect working order.

Driving home 4 hours down interstate 95 with no right tail light was not exactly a positive situation to find yourself in after paying a dealer 26 thousand US dollars...right I mean wouldn't you expect the car to work properly immediately off their lot? After being assured repeatedly it passed every safety inspection with flying colors? You don't find that the slightest bit dishonest?

I'm not rich this car basically cost every penny I have and no it doesn't have a warranty!

When someone is asking about how much it's going to cost to fix a problem it's probably because they are going to have to write a personal check for the expenses not claim it under warranty. Car is at 57,000 miles and the warranty ended at 50,000 so all parts and labor now get added to purchase cost.

So you believe the dealer knew of the faults and intentionally lied to you? Did you test drive it? Were the items working before you purchased the car?

Were you not aware that, unless a warranty is included or you purchase one, that used cars are "as is"?

Yes I think they knew about this problem and chose to try to get the car out the door without fixing it.

Yes I'm aware the car has no warranty, but it needs to start in 100 percent working order at time of purchase. It appears to my analytical mind here the car started faulty.

Unfortunately the onus is on the buyer to ensure that the car is in acceptable condition. That is why PPIs exist.

I recommend just picking up a used taillight off ebay and seeing if a swap is all you need. There's a tutorial on how to swap taillights on the forum.

It seems purely coincidental with no ill intent by dealer at this juncture.

Inspect it yourself and see if anything seems obvious. It sounds like a grounding issue to have them all fail.

Most dealers have a warranty even on used cars.

There isn't anything wrong with your tail lights itself and the dealer probably wasn't aware of this issue before they sold you the vehicle.

There is a lack of grounding with the pre-LCI tail lights, which requires a new back cover and two extra supporting ground plugs.

Check with the dealer, they might be able to goodwill the retrofit of the ground plug or you can DYI for under $50.

I shouldn't need a warranty on the drive out of the dealers parking lot! Lol my god man the car shouldn't be having any issues just driving her home...I think thats a fair expectation even for a used vehicle.

The salesman was super nervous and anxious to get the test drive over as fast as possible and was trying to talk numbers the entire 90 seconds I was behind the wheel for the test drive. It could have been throwing codes and I didn't even notice due to his posturing and distraction. I tried to pay attention but was running on empty mentally from work week/travel.

I play the numbers in life, and the odds of this failing the moment I drive home but at no point in time before are very very long odds. That would be uncanny that after 4 years of existence and usage this device chose to fail just moments after we signed the papers and moved money...

Maybe I'm crazy. Maybe we'll go to mars. Who knows.

Thanks to whoever posted that diagram stating this is a known problem.

Cheers

This issue occurs sporadically; I'm 99.9999% sure the dealer wasn't aware of it because there is a goodwill code and extended warranty for them to do for free, prior to the sale.

They can't fix it if they didn't know it was broken.

Impressive you own an M2.

Are you stating that my taillight specifically has an extended warranty itself?!?

Thanks.

Yes, the F22 (M240i) and F87 (M2) uses the same tail light.

If your vehicle is less than 5 years old from the delivery date, it's has a 5 years, 75,000 mile extended warranty on the taillight.

Print out the form I shared and show it to the dealer if they give you any pushback.

Any dealer would be able to give you that info but it's not available online.

Contact the dealer. While you're at it ask them for the bmw service history just so you have a better idea of the intervals you're looking at for future fluids and maint.

Whenever I would get assigned to the Small Claims docket(AKA: "The Gong Show") I ran into that issue constantly. My motto was "If you don't know, don't go."
Back in 1992 I bought an out of warranty 1988 M6 with 37k on the clock. I knew full well that once I drove it over the curb 100% of the repairs were my responsibility. If the motor had grenaded I was looking at over $25k to replace it, but I took the gamble.
I owned it for three wonderful years; my only regret was stupidly selling it in a fit of practicality.
