To BMS Stage 1 or not?

I own a 2016 M235i 6MT & have been on the fence of doing an upgrade by adding just a simple Stage 1. Car is stock & owned it from the beginning. Will be running octane 93. I have the habit of driving in Sport mode every time.

Question: After the Stage 1 tune, will driving in comfort mode feel pretty similar to (pre-BMS stage 1) Sport mode? (Minus the stiff suspension & firmer steering)

Any benefit with Octane 93 over Octane 91 really? I'm in Canada (Greater Toronto Area), not sure the quality of fuel here compared to the rest of the NA market.

I am very pleased with the output of the N55 engine already... but it's been just over 4 years of ownership and thinking it's time to do a little upgrade to it.

Thanks in advanced.

I had a BMS stg 1 tune on my2016 and it was a noticeable bump over stock power and took 5 minutes to install/remove. No issues whatsoever car felt completely stock but stronger, I think it adds 3 psi to stock boost for 13 psi total, a very mild but fun addition. I've since gone down the flash rabbit hole in search of moar but would recommend. Check classified mine is for sale!

Have a 2016 M235i Xdrive in Ottawa, ON and once the warranty was up I got a new chargepipe and a bm3 Stage 1 93 Octane tune (I use Petro 94).
Gains are significant and the car comes alive. Yes there is a definite difference between 91 and 93 - so much so that I pay a lot more for the Petro 94 than I could for the Costco 91. I will be going Stage 2 in the Spring but for now Stage 1 is a lot of fun!

I also have a '16 m235, and only stayed on BM3 stage 1 for a couple of weeks. It's fun, but stage 2 is a different animal. I think you just leave too much on the table for price of BM3, if you only go stg 1.

We always recommend going with the JB4, at least you'll have room to grow in the future and the higher resale value.

Hello Mike,

How does shipping to Canada work? Will there be additional customs charge or does the shipping price include it?

Sorry I have not ordered yet as it was not a priority. Thanks.

I do free shipping on BMS tuners to forum members, customs is on average 10% of the value of the item

Thank you Mike! I received my stage 1 on Tuesday & promptly installed it yesterday.

Initial thoughts: I can definitely feel the added boost & I'm not sure if it's just me or just in my head but the throttle response is smoother when getting into gear. I only drive in sport mode and with the manual transmission, throttle response feels better with the tune. There are various amounts of videos on YT to help with locating the connectors to install. Removing the engine cover & a suitable place to place the tune is pretty straight forward and took me about 15-20 minutes just to figure out how comfortable I am with the placement of the wires/box.

End of the day I'm very happy with the results & how direct it is to plug it in.

PS. Because I am in Canada, I got hit with a hefty customs charge of approximately 30%... hopefully those in Canada intend on the path I went can use my experience to have an informed decision.

THANKS!

Thank you for the feedback, I checked with my shipping team, they will be using USPS when possible. I believe the charges are not nearly as much with USPS

Don’t wait to upgrade your charge pipe if you’re increasing the boost pressure.

Yes thanks for pointing out! Very much a good preventative measure to ensure that it can handle the increased boost.
