2014 BMW spark plugs replacement
Greetings:
Just replaced my spark plugs on my 2014 f22 n20 228i. Pics to follow of each spark plug. Mileage: 32806 The replacement wasn't all that bad. It took me about 45 or 60 minutes...just taking my time. #4 or the furthest one back was the hardest. So, patience and an assortment of 3/8" u-joint attachment with several different length extensions. Purchased the spark plugs from FCP Euro. I'd give a step-by-step, but the video quality at the youtube is excellent...on the n20 engine. biz

Spark plug #4 comparison:
Please NOTE: All the extra extensions and u-joint needed to reach most rear plug. It is difficult, but not impossible. biz

So...I'm just looking for opinions on the condition of the OLD spark plugs?? Was I justified in changing them? Or was I premature?
I've been told that I've been premature in many things in my life, so you won't hurt my feelings...if it goes that way. biz

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the not so good pictures. For some reason I thought the forum allowed the picture to be enlarged.
Yeah, I agree...the old plugs do look pretty good for the mileage. But, I am happy that I took a few minutes to change them. Peace of mind kind of thing. biz

Yes, there are several good videos on the utube to view the process of a spark plug change on the n20 or n26 engines. But, I'd like to offer just a couple small but important TIPS/Suggestions.
1. Use the correct and proper thin wall spark plug socket. I used the following...and so happy that I made the purchase!! 14mm 12 Point Spark Plug Swivel Socket - CTA 1061 Part #: CTA-1061 2. Use compressed air (from a can or air compressor) to blow the spark plug area prior to working on engine. Once the coil has been removed...and before touching the spark plug, blow some compressed air down the area making certain that it is clean. 3. Do NOT use anti-seize compound on the spark plug threads. BMW has a TSB that using it might cause a fault code or short. 4. DO use a proper torque ratchet wrench. This is NO time to guess by "feel". Good luck with your spark plug change project!! biz

Is the inner ceramic insulator nose chipped (right by the electrode) on plug #2? That plug looks like it took more abuse than the others, but none look really bad (but the main indicator for this can't show in your pics - how eroded are the electrode tips?).
FWIW, I got my plugs changed as the last act of free maintenance (about 38k miles) and the improvement (smoother idle) is quite apparent, so I do not think you were premature. |

I just did this on my wife's 2016 228i with 58k on it. Just curious why you needed all those extensions and joints for #4. I had no problem using a single joint and extension on all 4.
