Started a long-term test on a leather product from Leather World. It's supposed to restore the matte top coating that gets worn and breaks down over time. My front driver seat feels new again to touch. Going to do the passenger seat in April as long as this holds up through March.
Oh, and I paid my car off! Feels great having a car owned by ME now and not by the bank.

Finally got around to installing the RW front lip. Fitment isn't the greatest and because they were less than accommodating about returning it I opted to just keep and live with it.
Wish someone made one that follows the body lines a bit more like those made for the M2 but this will do for now! [IMG][/IMG] Last edited by theduke; 03-08-2021 at 11:17 AM.. |

Once your long-term test is complete, please feel free to share with us your test results and the name of the Leather World product you chose.

The past week or so I've had an annoying issue with the front parking sensors. They would beep off the driver's side showing an obstruction for no reason. It would even beep in reverse, again, with nothing in front or behind the cart. Watched a video where they sprayed WD40 on the sensors and it sorted it out. I must say it's spot on, worked like charm!

Had a nice little chat with a state trooper on the Ohio turnpike the other day. To be perfectly fair he was very professional and pleasant to deal with, no complaints other than the $200 "toll" he charged me for using his fine motorway at an excessive rate of speed.
Got home, removed and sold my Escort Max 360 and M1 from the F23, prewired for a ZW5 laser shifter install (like I did on my F31) and ordered the new Redline 360 C. That gear should be here in a few weeks. Only annoying thing is the mount for the detector is different so need to spend $100 with BlendMount to get different adapters for the cars. Also ordered a set of Luxe mats from Lloyd for the convertible, now that the weather is getting nice I can finally swap out the all weather set.

The gentleman on the YouTube video stated moisture is known to penetrate the sensors causing them to give a false reading from time to time. A quick squirt of WD40 directly on the sensor displaces the moisture. The method works for front and rear sensors, any year, and is also effective when getting an actual error code. I'm sure it's not a 100% cure-all, but it sorted my phantom reading instantly.

This leads me to wonder: are CB radios still useful in that regard? (I know this dates me terribly, but west of the Mississippi back in the day they were essential when you needed to cover long distances at high speeds. Mind you, "needed" is a personal judgement! ) I'll confess that I'm now at the age where running inside the enforcement zone makes the most sense for me. In Ohio, that's <10 MPH over the limit; in California, it's <8 MPH over, and I'm not sure about other states. Today, I only exceed the limits when I have someone leading and am willing to sit on needles and pins so that I don't get nailed. I don't use a phone, so the latest apps for speeders aren't available to me. I'm planning a cross-country trip for late-summer / early-fall and think I might well need a short course in state-by-state speeding ticket avoidance.

To answer your question CB is, in my experience, next to useless. OK for the novelty factor I suppose. Either Escort Redline 360 and their integrated ZW5 laser shifter OR V1 Gen 2 and ALP laser shifter. Either of those pairings, plus Waze, about as much as you need to do. Beyond that IMO info overload with minimal benefit.

After your previous post I looked up the Redline 360 and the ZW5 Laser Shifter. These products showed me just how far behind I am when it comes the progress that's been made. Waze I get and know about, even though at present I haven't had a need to use a phone in the car. Because I'm familiar with running at the average speed of your NY–LA run, I'm very impressed that you could run 34.6 hours at that rate of progress. In '85 I ran SF-Denver and back in my E24 M6 a number of times at an average speed of 79 MPH, just slightly slower than you were in your 2.3X longer run. I could do that in my 30s; in my 70s now...not so much, I fear!

ALP is definitely better than ZW5 with one big exception... install is a b*tch by comparison (and it's much more expensive). The ZW5 on the other hand can be wired to the terminals under the engine bay and it automatically turns itself on and off when the car powers up. It wirelessly talks to the detector for an integrated solution and you do not need to pull any wires through the firewall. So it's like 80% of the performance for 20% of the headache. Just noticed you are in Ohio. Parma County at least if you pay your ticket online versus over the phone they drop some points. Every little bit helps, assume other areas maybe do the same thing.

My first experiences here took place during President Carter's 55 MPH national speed limit mandate, a time when Ohio was credited with taking it more seriously than any other state. I spent many a mile following a long line of interstate traffic running exactly 55 MPH with a state trooper at the head of the line. Even without a trooper leading the way, if you got carried away by running 56 MPH the chances of being pulled over were excellent. Compared to the late 70s to the mid 80s, there's remarkably less enforcement on Ohio's interstate system. My guess is that it's too expensive anymore to have that many troopers out on the road at the same time. In California, where I lived during the 55 MPH years, we just kept on running hard. After all, while the state legislature had authorized the CHP to install radar a decade or so earlier, because of all the legislators' DUIs over the years they'd never funded it! The first time I became aware of the CHP having radar was being pulled over in 1998 after having been gone from the state for the previous three years. Imagine my dismay when the officer politely informed me how he'd clocked my speed. Before, he would have had to have paced me from behind, a remarkably easy tactic to defeat, even in the middle of the night after you'd learned the headlight patterns of the various CHP cars.

So you're an old pro at this! I'm just a glorified, underfunded amateur I've got the old 1975 C&D issues for the 55 MPH and also the original Cannonball. I'm starting to hoard them unfortunately.

C&D, back in the day, was locked-in at #2 on my short-list of drop-what-you're-doing-and-read-it-cover-to-cover-right-now. That day lasted for a good 20 years or more (I've lost track). I won't even begin to rattle off the names of the multitude of top-flight writers – nay, journalists – employed by the rag (a term I use with the greatest affection). One treasure I recall from the 80s was a writer whining bitterly about being expected to review the usability / quality / whatever of a particular vehicle's...cupholders!

Virginia and Washington DC are the only two places that have banned radar detectors. Elsewhere it is not illegal to DETECT radar. If police have the right to shoot a beam at you, you have the right to figure out when that beam is shooting at you.
In the 70s some crazy scientists came up with radar jammers (real ones) that blast enough radar microwaves that no police radar beams would make it to your car and bounce back to the radar gun. One guy melted the plastic bumper on his car. They are probably all dead or sterile by now. So they made it illegal to JAM a police radar gun. Once in while you see "radar jammers" in the shady sections of magazines and the interwebs but almost all of these are fake. Since nobody thought a police LASER BEAM speed detector was possible in the 70s and 80s, it was never made illegal. So laser jammers are legal (so far). |

Finally got around to putting these beautiful SSR Type-6's on the car. Picked them up from K8_M235i last year.
I can't get the TMPS to work with them though. The reset gets stuck on 99% and the pressure reads "--" at every corner. Not sure what's going on there. Any ideas?

Currently laser shifters are legal in 38 states, the exceptions being California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and the District of Columbia. The trick to running laser shifters is having something that auto-offs after a set time e.g. you get hit, reduce speed, then shifter disables to allow officer to get a reading at lower rate of speed. You cannot just shift forever with impunity.
