Good news.

Learned the importance of having a mechanic you trust and getting second opinions.

Got the brake fluid and coolant all flushed and back on the road. Car was in need of nothing else.

Even though it's only been about 5k miles, it's been a year since my last service.

Got a couple local quotes that I found absolutely hilarious for an oil change.

I called Crevier BMW first, arguably the largest dealership in the area. They quoted me $190 for an oil change. They have a special going on for $99 4cyl or $109 6cyl, but they said my M240i is an "M car" so they are unable to honor the ad. It's only for non-M badged cars.

The other local dealership, Sterling BMW, quoted me a mind-blowing $280 for a simple oil change. They're on PCH in Newport Beach so I'd imagine they'd be on the higher side, but that's double my previous highest quote I've ever had.

Looks like I'll be going back to Bullet Performance for fluids. They're right by my work so it's pretty convenient.

Easy enough to do yourself with a 32mm

I used to poke fun at my brother who had a BMW for paying $300 for an oil change and "check X and Y" where X and Y is bullshit. Ok he did get 5 cents worth of "wiper fluid topoff" also.

Now that I've done my first two oil changes on my 2017 M240 while under warranty, I wanted to use real BMW approved oil so theres no way they could f with any warranty claims. I asked the local deal what they charged for oil, I almost threw up. I got it half that price online, but still think I spent $75 on just the oil. Now that I've done two oil changes, I'm out of warranty. Time to go to Mobil1 from Walmart.

FWIW my local dealer will do an oil change for $75 which is less than cost of parts online. They do oil change specials quite often. Check with them!

Scheduled appointment for next week at a local BMW aftermarket shop to get the catless down pipe, charge pipe, front mounted intercooler, turbo inlet, and a couple of other things installed, to go with the Bootmod3 tune I'm upgrading to.

You might consider FCP Euro. You can get an oil change kit and it is guaranteed for life. Yes the filter but even the oil. You do have to pay to ship it back but that is less than the cost for sure. And if you are near them, it's a no brainer. They have the BMW oil. I use Liqui MOLY but it's your choice.

And delivered free to your door. I always thought that guarantee was creepy but they don't. I have not shipped oil back but I do use BMW wiper blades and change them for free every spring. And it's not that far for you to take a ride. If the traffic wasn't so bad, it would be a nice ride. And if you can figure out how to make it on the way somewhere.....

I always found FCP Euro's customer service to be outstanding and shipping is fast. Just say'in it's another option.

i found the amazingly charismatic Slowspeed video talking about comfort seat positioning. so i tried it using BimmerCode app. and it worked, perfectly.

it seems like everyones instructions for this are slightly different, so here is what i changed in *MY* 2018 m240xc (F22 B58):

"Seat Module Driver" (CFAS_PLX_1) > [expert mode] > 3000 SM_GLOBAL > EINAUSSTIEGSHILFE = Modus_FA_SLV (0x03)

i didnt even bother changing the defaults for the other two settings for the "how far back to move it" and "minimum distance from the back-most-position" position.

Car was queen in garage, but drove her today, wiped off the wheels good when I got back

Also I spoke with 2 BMW reps, and HQ once, and if you a certified oil and filter, same as OEM spec, a manufacturer would have to PROVE it was the different oils fault.

Edmunds.com quote:

Potential warranty problems: The language in some owner's manuals suggests that using an oil other than the one specified by the manufacturer will void the car's warranty. This is not the case, says Thom Smith, Valvoline's vice president of branded lubricant technology.

According to the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act, the onus would be on GM or another automaker to prove that a non-manufacturer oil damaged the engine. If dealers deny the warranty claim without first investigating it, they are in violation of the act, Smith says.

Consumers just need to make sure that any alternate oil they use is comparable in quality to the automaker's specified oil. Many oil manufacturers, including Valvoline, are so confident of their product that they offer their own warranty against engine damage that their products might be alleged to have caused.

I'd do what you feel comfortable with. I ordered redline & mann filter and took to BMW and total was $130. Oil & filter was $85, $45 for BMW to change it. My understanding is its mostly the parts prices, 20 minute charge for change, even though their min. is 30 minutes. I'd ask, both my BMW dealerships here do. Also used Redline DCTF tranny fluid for manual, which they and most rec now, nice difference in shifting.

Installed MHD's new CAN FlexFuel Analyzer. Install was pretty easy and now I can see the Ethanol content through MHD. Just waiting for the Auto-tune flexfuel maps to be released.

The Castrol Edge Euro or Pennzoil Platinum Euro L might be better choices. Check out the myriad oil threads.

Badges

I saw somebody asked about the badges that I replaced on the side, the m badges. I got them from ECS tuning, not cheap but they're factory....

Got back to my car....

I worked out of town for 4 days, flew up to Pennsylvania, left my m235i at the airport, my rental car was a Chevy spark. Needless to say it was so nice to get back in my car back here at home.......

Sunny and 70s, so it was carwash day. Decided not to stop with the exterior and spent some time under the hood. Not concours-spotless, but pleasing to me as we approach our first 7 years together.

I started with Adam's all purpose cleaner and found it needed to be stronger for the painted parts with grime. It was good, however, on the black plastic parts, such as the engine cover and black plastic panel forward of that. I then just spent time with paper towels with Goo Gone rubbing the grease/grime spots, and then clean towels to wipe up....just going space by space where lots of black grime had accumulated over time. I left the hood open for a couple of hours for any slight remaining fumes to disperse. No water ever used...nothing with pressure...just "elbow grease". I used Adams VRT conditioner on the rubber seals at the front and rear of the compartment.

Below are what mine look like behind the upper and lower openings in the bumper cover. Immediately behind the OEM plastic is the Lowes screening I had installed. Behind that is the rock guard; I looks somewhat like a radiator really tight finning. Sorry the photos aren't better, and especially that I didn't shoot images before the install.

In case you haven't seen it or something similar, at the bottom is the realoem.com parts explosion for the radiator and its associated parts. The diagram is for a 2017 M240i; I'm guessing your radiator, etc. are the same.

I noticed the main(center) radiator has a grill in front to protect it. My car is a 2021 M240i. The side radiators have no grill. I have some black metal gutter guards left over. I removed the side grills and just cut up the black metal gutter guard to fit inside. I drilled some very small holes along the bottom of the grills' vertical slats so I can attach the gutter guard with some small zip ties. Turned out very well. Now I don't have to worry rocks and road debris damaging my side radiators.

Thanks for this. I'll add it to my 'to do' list for when the weather finally decides to warm up around here.
