Run Flat Tires

I know there are threads on this issue and I have read them all. I have 230i convertible with M package that has the 18" 719 wheels. I have now replaced at least 4 tires and 2 wheels even after having bent wheels fixed in 2 years of ownership. Every time you hit a bump or small pothole it sounds like you just hit a crater. Just had another blow out destroying the sidewall. My question is do non run flat tires really help with this problem. I'd like to know if anyone had the same problem, made the switch and did it solve the problem.

I've only ran go flats so I can only suggest switching to 17" wheels. Gives you more sidewall for those craters

I replaced my runflats after a blowout (not in the sidewall) because no one in my area carries any size run flat and had trouble trying to order them. But I live in a very rural area. The non-runflats I replaced do take road imperfections slightly better and may help in your case. I am surprised the sidewall is blowing out- it will be quite stronger in the runflat.

I think the sidewalls are stronger so that you can drive on it without air. They do bulge or break rather than flex. Photo of recent event below.

I have never been a fan of Pirelli tires. Over priced and over rated, IMO. If you need run flat, the Goodyear tires have performed pretty well.

Took the RF Perellis off after first year of ownership. So harsh a ride and definitely blew a few on Philly roads. Ran 18 Michelin PSS then went to 19s with square 235/35s PS4S.
Blew a few of those on the shit streets of the city.
Now Bridgestone Potenza S007a 245/35s for more profile and hopefully less damage.

Maybe need my eyes checked,😁

Oh, use a full size spare in the trunk of you can on that vert or get roadside assistance.

I have 17 inch wheels. Ran the Pirelli summer only run flats that came on the car until last fall. Probably put about 20k miles on them. They were noisy when I got the car and got noisier as they wore, but I never had an issue with pot hole impacts like you and I live in Minnesota, we have pot holes aplenty.

After winter I replaced the Pirellis with Bridgestone Driveguard Plus all season tires. Got tired of doing the winter/summer swaps when I hardly drive the car in winter. I love the Bridgestones. Still harder riding than a non run flat, but they are smooth and quiet and awesome in the rain. Predictable handling and I drive them hard.

But 17 inch wheels will probably do the most to solve your issue.

17" wheels carrying the smaller (lighter) motor over potholes aplenty. 80,00000 miles and never a flat. Wore out the runflats and some Bridgestones.

Switched long ago from 18" to 17" to cope with the Michigan moonscape roads. Never had a bent wheel, tire problem, etc. Car rides better too.

When you went from 18 to 17, did you go with run flats or did you also switch to non run flats?

My 18s were not runflat and my 17s are not runflat. My car just came with an inflator kit, but I substituted a mini-spare tire kit from bimmerzone.com in my trunk. Of course, in now-9 years, I've never needed. I should probably check the inflation one of these days! Maybe even replace it at this age, although it's had a very gentle existence and no UV ray exposure.
