Widest tire I can fit on stock wheels?

I've searched the forum on this topic, but seeking confirmation on what is the widest possible tire width I can install on my stock wheels, which are 225/40/18 run flats all around( M240i xDrive). I think my wheel width all around is 7.5"x18" (or is it 8"x18" in the back?). I would love to swap my Perilli Centurato P7 for staggered MPSS. I was hoping to go with a staggered setup of 225/40/18 front and 245/35/18 rear. But I think I can't due to the width of the wheels in the rear (i.e., 7.5"). Maybe the highest I can go is 235, but I've also read as high as 245 (no more). Someone please help clear the air on this topic, and definitively advise on how wide I can go with the rear stock wheels I have. Thx.

Not sure how to post pictures on a smart phone, but google tire width and rim width and you will get a few charts. You can also go to tirerack.com and find the exact tire you are looking for and go to specs on the bottom of the page. It will show you min and Max recommended rim width.

Also keep in mind maximum width may not be maximum performance if that is your goal.

That's helpful, thx. It looks like the 245s require a minimum rim width of 8.0". But I think the rim width of my stock wheels are 7.5", which would imply that the 245s are too wide for my rim. Can you or anyone else confirm what rim width I have given my current stock setup?

Btw, I don't really care about max performance. This is purely aesthetics as I can't stand how narrow the rear tires appear to me.

My humble advice is to shop around for some wheels.

If I remember correctly the stock setup is 7.5 in front and 8 in rear. I sold stock and got 9" in rear with a 265. This is generally regarded as the maximum width that you can run in the rear without modification.

People also commonly run 9.5" in the rear with 255 or 265. It looks much more aggressive than stock.

Apex make some decent quality wheels for a pretty good price. If you sell the stock setup you can recover some money and put it towards a new wheelset.

The wheel offset also makes a huge visual difference. The low cost option would be to get some wheel spacers to get a an offset closer to flush. Just make sure your lugs are long enough to handle the spacer.

use the correct size tires and just get spacers to push the wheels out to the edge of the wheel well.

Also, tires may say 225, but may be larger or smaller depending on the mfg.
You need to really look at the specs and compare.

Example: Nitto 01s/05s and Re71's are almost a full size larger than what they say on the sidewall.

Are you running 265 rear 235 fronts? With 0 modification?

Correct. Pretty confident I can do 245/275 with no modification. The 275 in the rear would be pushing the limits of the rim width. I'm going to try 245/265 next time.... Maybe 255/265, but to do that I think I'll need a 3mm spacer and a fender roll. Also by then I will have m4 LCA.

The stock tyres are the widest certified tyres (as specified by the tyre manufacturers) for the wheels fitted, i.e 225/40-18 on 7.5" wide wheels and 245/35-18 on 8" wide wheels.
