This sort of misunderstanding of the basic physics of friction is pervasive on car forums. I would write something to try to explain it, but I'm starting to accept that it would just waste my time and that of readers who don't get it. So today I'm going register my sigh and move on.

The grip in any given direction is all down to the tyre friction circle, here is a fairly descriptive article on it: https://www.autoweek.com/car-life/co...iction-circle/, for those who are not familiar with it.

I do use a winter tire setup on my E39 daily driver.
There are very rare situations in Colorado where chains are required by law and snow tires are not sufficient so I carry them in the trunk. The slip on the rear wheels and give you instant low speed traction.

This thread has served the purpose I hoped when I started it and now run its' course. The opening post's linked article will be easily searched/found by those interested. Other than a couple of obtuse rants, we had some good additional information to help those learning about winter driving and how tires interact with powertrains.

Time to start thinking about Spring!

Over the course of 20 years in Northern New England, I learned to not think about spring until it had sprung.

That I do with the RWD M240i, but the real fun car gets the upgrades, as the M240i is closer to a minivan in the ultimate fun factor
