M325i 6MT replacement
Hey all, what would be the best way to go about fixing my transmission? My 2nd gear synchros are shot and I have to really baby it to keep it from grinding. Every other gear is fine. Can I pursue having it rebuilt or should I just buy a reman from BMW? I live in middle GA so running across of lot of BMW parts is kinda tough going so a used one is few and far between. Any suggestions?

From what I've heard/read in the forums you will need a whole new transmission as BMW/ZF do not offer replacement parts for the transmission. This does worry me though since I also have the 6MT. Do you mind telling me how many miles you have and if you usually shift hard into 1st?

Hey man thanks for the answer. I thought I'd read that somewhere, but I think it was an older post, I was hoping something might've changed.
I bought it knowing the 2nd synchros were toast. It had 84k on it when I purchased it. There's no other problems and in fact, so long as you let the RPMS drop down some it slips in to second no problem. You just can't reef on it in first and expect to bang it in to second but again, I bought it knowing that I'd need to fix the transmission. |

There are no rebuild kits or parts available. You'll need to find a used one or a remanufactured from BMW. You'll also likely need to get a new dual mass flywheel, clutch, and throw out bearing. All in, you're looking at $3500 to $6000 in parts, not installed.

You might be able to get aftermarket synchro parts from this specialist in the UK: https://www.bristoltransmissionsshop...chro-242-p.asp

I’m a little surprised the aftermarket hasn’t come up with something, but I suppose it may not be profitable. Not too many manuals in circulation and they probably don’t fail all that often.

Sorry that I can't help, but I want to chime in that I had two manual transmissions replaced in my 2014 M235i (my stealer tried to screw me out of the 2nd replacement, and the only recourse I had was switching to another dealer). So based on my personal experience those transmissions are weak especially in 1-2 gear, I recall that even Car & Driver had a synchro crunch when testing M2. Such a synchro crunch will only get worse, and because BMW's entire business model is to milk their customers as much as possible, the only fix is to replace the entire transmission for $$$$$. That's why I am eyeing Caddy CT4 Blackwing as my next car: those Tremeks are build tough, and supposedly can be shifted as quickly as you can move your hand, which you cannot do with 1-2 gears in any BMW.
