Car tells me it’s time for oil change.

I have had car less than year and it has 3800 miles on it. Why is car indicating it’s time for a service ?

The oil change notice is determined by the cars computer (and service setting), Using time and maybe temps plus other variables.

Actually on my Mercedes, I believe the oil itself was analyzed by sensors.

Maybe one year since produced? Same happened to me last summer. Worked out great because I was around 3000 miles and dealer changed it for free. Kind of like a break-in oil change.

Yep

Took it in for the service. It is the time from manufacture date. So car had change at 4000 miles and now it will be 10k. I don’t know if it also a year ? Guess the car will inform me.

It's worth reading Mike Miller's Lifetime Maintenance Schedule:

https://www.dslreports.com/r0/downlo...e%20v03.13.pdf.

Mike is the tech columnist for the BMW Car Club of America's Roundel Magazine. He's extremely knowledgeable about how to take care of BMWs for the long term. What Mike has to offer is oriented towards owners who intend to keep their cars for a long time, especially beyond 100K miles. His tome is worth reading even if you're not one of those owners; there's a lot to be learned in it.

The principal reason I'm a BMWCCA member is to enjoy access to Mike Miller's tech column in Roundel.
