Anyone here go off-roading?

I'm thinking Mid-Range Pickup.
I hear great things about the Toyota Tacoma TRD PRO but to me the engine is rather dated.
I do like the new Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, but its a Chevy ..........

And DAMN these things get PRICEY !!

Thoughts ?

My daily is actually a 2018 4Runner TRD Pro(even older engine than the Tacoma I believe but bullet proof which is good for reliability / off roading). I've taken it on a few camping and off road trips and it just eats anything up you throw at it. I have seen Jeeps out off road me but they were all heavily modified and some even broke down the next morning or during the run. I've had 0 issues with the TRD Pro and is actually very comfortable to daily.

From what I've read the 4Runner is actually a better off roader than the Tacoma since the Tacoma has a longer wheel base which makes it a bit more difficult to off road in certain situations.

Unfortunately I didn't get into off roading as much as I thought so may be selling my TRD Pro soon.

What kind of offroading are you looking for? Trails? Mudding? Rocks?

Really a Jeep Wrangler is the best bet. The short wheelbase, suspension travel and position of the axles in relation to the bodywork all play a factor.

If you want a pickup for normal use and offroad in it when you feel like then that's a different story. The good thing about the Colorado is it can come with a diesel. The low end power is what really helps out when climbing trails.

Havent had a Jeep worthy of offloading since 2011. Use to do a ton of night driving on trails. Good times...

Someday, maybe I'll change my avatar..

I drive the e90 up to the cabin, then my niece and her SO show up in the '70s Suburban. Wives can barely even get up in the cab, then the boys can head of down the logging roads to find a new trail!!!! When snow, even more fun!

What kind of offroading are you planning on doing? Tight trails in the woods, mudding, or sand dunes/beach running type of stuff?

Have you thought of a SxS/UTV? I have a Polaris Jagged X and it is a blast.

I'm planning on buying a Jeep Gladiator in the next 9-18 months. The last jeep I had was an 01 XJ that I sold to buy my first BMW, e46 325xi. I miss both of those cars..

2017 Colorado zr2. Only issue I had was the transmission torque converter (known issue on '17s and other earlier models). Swapped fluids and new TC and everything was right in the world. Had no issues towing 7k lbs of time with it (at sea level, relatively flat roads home, wouldn't try at higher altitudes). Did pretty good rock crawling in Tennessee and missing in Florida. Came down over a small boulder with the front passenger wheel and dropped somewhat hard onto the boulder with the rock slider. Took the full force and zero bending of the inner body where the sliders are mounted (yes, they are NOT frame mounted).

Forgot that I also got tboned on the driver side in the rain from a lady turning. Low impact, but still high enough that her Nissan Rogue hit the rock slider instead of the body. Ripped her bumper off, scratch the slider and took a chunk out of the back wheel. Replaced wheel under warranty, took $1650 cash out from insurance claim.

Let me go ahead and save you a ton of money--buy a mountain bike instead. 10% of the price AND you get a workout when you do it.

I have a hook up at a Chevy dealership if you are interested. Good friends of ours are the owners. ITs Rio Vista Chevrolet in Buellton. Let me know if you would like me to get you set up.
