Is it just me? Gak from PFC-08's
As reported I installed the PFC-08's before a track day and had good results. The dust after the track day was copious but easily cleaned.
What has me stumped, is the fronts deposited some really nasty stuff at first, like immediately. Was there paint or something on them? See the pic... I tried a strong wheel cleaner and progressed thru every chemical I have: adhesive remover, paint thinner, acetone, lacquer thinner, Brakleen, etc. Next is sand it off with 1000 grit paper and re-polish I guess. Anybody else see this? |

I haven't had anything quite that bad yet, but my DTC-70s dust like crazy and I have to scrub pretty hard using a heavy-duty cleaner to get it all off after an event. It's been a major drama every time.
This year I'm trying Sonax's Rim Shield hoping that the dust won't cling so tightly.

Had the same build up issue with my DTC60s. Tends to happen to hot brake dust/ wear metals and water, in particular.
I spent a good 30-45 mins (per wheel) to get the stuff off. I used sonax wheel cleaner (many applications), and decently stiff brushes and a tooth brush. |

When I'm done tracking this car (likely at the end of the 2020 season), I'm going to get some "dustless" ceramic pads and forget I ever had to perform this routine.

I hear that. This time around, I used a sealant (Chemical Guys Jetseal) on the areas that had bad build up. Hopefully it is easier to clean. I have a track day this weekend. I'll report back if I remember.
Also, based on my experience and research, this seems to happen to Carbon Metallic pads more than other. I've had Carbotech/Gloc pads that I tracked and didn't really experience this. I think PFC and Hawk are both Carbon Metallic. Food for thought. |

you need to clean brake dust off ASAP or it will cake on. That goes for any brake pad... A regular street pad you might be able to get away with weekly or semi-weekly cleanings, but, a track car needs to be cleaned asap. The more aggressive pads are even worse than modest PFC endurance pads like the 08 compound. Hawk pads like DTC-60 or 70 are more ferrous (metal) and will even eat paint as the hot pad material embeds itself.
Ceramic pads won't produce such aggressive dust but they also won't stop the car as well either lol. They are usually trash in regard to cold-bite too. |

Update. Wheel did not get wet over the weekend and the dust came off with sonax full effect plus with ease.
I usually clean my wheels next day after im back from the event. Hard to do anything if it rains during the event or on the way back. Not willing to wipe my wheels betweens sessions. At least not yet lol. |

I put the Sonax Rim Shield on before going to the track and cleaned the wheels a week after I returned with Sonax Wheel Cleaner Plus using this moderately stiff brush: https://www.amazon.com/Carrand-92019...dp/B0009VIPYI/. I'm very pleased with that combination, as it was by far the easiest job I've had cleaning these wheels. I got a couple of Sonax Wheel Rim Brushes and will try them out next time. They don't have any metal like the Carrand brush does, so they'll be less likely to scratch the wheels. Besides, my impression is that an aggressive brush isn't required when using the two Sonax products. Quote:
With a street car, I like a clean set before the first session. (Heck, the wheels still look new after cleaning them.) I clean the outside of the calipers, too - just basic vanity, I guess.
