After some convincing, I've come around and will be getting PA4s for my OEM staggered 18s. I'll be running 225/40R18 all around. The rear rims are 1/2" wider than the fronts. I have a hard time seeing this 1/2" width will change anything other than the sidewall shape. The contact patch and tire diameter stays the same no matter what. 225/40R18s are completed fine for an 18X8 rim (the OEM staggered rear rim size).

When using the configurator on tirerack, does it ensure that the wheels will fit your car, or do I have to be concerned about brake calipers getting in the way, etc.?

I can say from personal experience that when they screw up, they stand behind their product 100%. Back in '09 I bought a Saab 9-3SC, and bought a winter tire, wheel, and TPMS sensor setup from them. Turns out, Saab had made a mid-year change to the sensors, and what they sent didn't work on my car. They sent me a check to cover my entire out of pocket for having the Saab dealer figure out the issue, then having to have the sensors changed out - was more than the cost of the sensors themselves. Great company!

I am interested to purchase the TPMS from them and ship them into Canada. I was really worried about the compatibility issue (in case of any mid-year change they may have done) and glad to hear that they are a company that will stand up to the products they sell. Thanks for this post, much appreciated.

I'm going to use the OEM rims as well so I went to my tire guy. Originally I was looking to do a staggered setup as per our OEM tire size but my guy said we can go square with 225/40 R18 which gives me additional tire options outside of the Pirelli that makes a winter 245/35 R18. So I'm getting a price on Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 225/40 R18 all the way around. I've had them all but the Hakkapelitta which I've heard good things.

Winter tires, Pilot Alpin PA4

Based on tirerack.com, this Performance winter tire sounds like the best bet to me. That's what I plan to buy. Not a lot more expensive than the Michelin Ice3 but more of a performance tire.

The Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 delivers the best balance of performance in this group, driving well on the road plus providing good ice, snow and very good wet traction. The new Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 and Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D both have good ice and wet traction and nearly matched the Pilot Alpin PA4's handling out on the road. The Bridgestone Blizzak LM60 takes a more focused approach by also providing good snow and ice traction, but it just doesn't have the wet road grip or clear road handling stability or precision of the other three tires.

We went with the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 225/40 R18 on the OEM rims for the 2016 M235 which I was really happy with last year. We have a 2017 230 as well and that one will get the Michelin X-Ice 3 in 17" replicas which came off the old 3 series we had. It will be interesting to compare as the 230 is lighter than the M235 and I'm moving the 230 down to 17". Both have xDrive.

OZ Omnia 18x8 ET45 wheels in grey (on sale at TireRack) combined with Pirelli Sottozero 3 225/45-18H tyres is what I picked. So far one outing in the snow this winter and the car performed well with this setup. Also had the same tyres in 225/45-17H size on our old 135i last winter with very good results for both snow, ice and dry winter road conditions.

I think you'll be very happy with them. We had very little snow in Kansas City year, but I did make sure to venture out the couple of times that we did get snow to test out the PA4s. I was pleasantly surprised with their performance in 1 to 3 inch dry and slick powder snow and my hilly neighborhood. I was most impressed with their cold temp and wet weather traction. They're freaking impressive in cold temps and actually let you get frisky with somewhat aggressive driving in the winter months. They were actually quite good when the temps broke into the 50s and 60s as well. Off the line traction is way better than the Pilot Supersports, largely because the PA4s tread blocks are so much more pliable and can grab the surface. After about 3500 miles of use last winter, the tires had minimal wear. They ride exceptionally well and have minimal tire roar.

I just put on a set of 4 Michelin X-ICE XI3 225/40-18 all around on the staggered rims. Mine are set at 32/36 psi to match the recommendations in the owners manual.

I haven't tested them in snow (and hope I don't have to, to be honest ), but they are more responsive and less squishy than I had anticipated on dry road. I drove them home from the shop with the temp about 10 F, twisted the wheel back and forth several times like a NASCAR driver warming up the tires, and the grip is not horrible. Not nearly as squishy as the Firestone Winterforce tires on my MINI.

My first choice for the M235i would have been the Michelin Alpin PA4, because they are a Performance Winter/Snow tire, versus the X-ICE which is marketed as a Studless Ice & Snow tire. The plan is to drive the MINI when it snows, so I really just need a tire that works in cold weather on the BMW. But, the Alpin PA4 were not available, so I got the X-ICE and so far so good.

I also chose Michelin X-ICE X13 225/40-18 all around on non-staggered OEM rims for the M235i xDrive I just bought last week.

I’ve already put >1,500 highway miles on them in varying winter conditions — culminating in 15” of unplowed snow for 0.7 mile. With DCT off, they barely spun, slid or slowed. On the other end of the spectrum, they were very smooth and quiet at highway speeds. In between, they were reasonably sticky and responsive on dry, winding country roads (taken at 6/10ths at 20F).

We’ve been completely satisfied with these same Michelins on our F25 X3s for the past two northern Michigan winters.

I’m running my 2018 M240xi on a square set of Hakkapelitta 9. I can run circles around my girlfriend’s Jeep. They’re unstoppable. I needed the studs though as my house is in a snowy ski resort town on top of a long and steep driveway.

Too funny. I was just telling my kids that both their 2 series are 100 times better than my Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland that have the Bridgestone DMV Blizzacks.

Pirelli Winter SottoZero Series II runflat staggered 225/40/18 + 245/35/18 this winter.

Happy with my choice. This is after using Pirelli SottoZero 3 and Michelin PA4 previous 2 winters.

Before ordering I read a lot of reviews that didn't really favor the tire but still went for it. Reason: I wanted a) a staggered setup in oem size to keep a kind of performance part in winter season (and this tire is one of only 2 options I could find for F22 in oem size), b) wanted runflat tires (this is after losing 6 tires to bubbles and tears in potholes the previous winter, can't downsize because of M-performance brakes).

So far so good. Ukrainian winter roads can be tough. Performance-wise these are right in between my previous 2 choices, not a truly performance tire such as Pirelli SottoZero 3 and not a squirmy mushiness such as Michelin PA4. The tire does not excel in any particular category but they have weathered all the usual winter stuff so far and are good enough for all kinds of winter conditions. The car is neutral (not much understeer compared to summer tires), predictable and solid.

Overall, a good medium-range performer. Weaknesses: not particularly good on wet pavement above freezing. Strong points: very good on ice for its class, good feedback and predictability, good directional stability, can handle potholes and such. Never had a problem in snow, such as fresh or deep snow (but I may be biased because my car is xDrive). Comfort is not a problem.

I upgraded my rims to 19's and saved the stock for winters using the same thing. Agree...far cry from my PSS's but got me safely through the winter.

I have been running 225/45-17 Blizzaks in a square set up for the last 10 winters. First on my M135i and then on my M235i. I will be running this same combination on my new M240i in the winter ahead. Current wheels for the Blizzaks = Alutec Grip in 17x7.5.

This setup works great on cold wet and icy pavement. Also works well in the snow though we don't get it often in Seattle. If we got more snow, I might consider a 215 width.

Unless one lives in a warm climate, a winter set up is important.
