New Car Day (to me)! How much is the oil change after free oil service ends?

Hello, friends. After so many months silently watching this forum, I managed to get a used 2 series. I am the second owner so it doesn't come with the free oil changes I believe.

I do need to change the oil as it is due now. Should I really go to BMW to perform this change? I was wondering if I could save some bucks by paying an independent shop to do that for me.

A few things that I need to know:
1) Is it materially more expensive if I do it in BMW versus doing it on an independent shop? I probably need to change the oil filter as well.
2) If I do it on an independent shop, will this service show up on CarFax/Autocheck?

Thanks!

(obs: I was thinking this question is pretty common and used Search in this forum and didn't find an answer for my case)

go to a good Indy that has the reputation to back up stellar work. I pay 150 for an oil change all in. Dealer charges 325. Also from my experiences the stealers have no clue how to fix anything anymore unless there is codes telling them what's wrong.

I don’t know which BMW dealer you use, but on bmw.ca under value service packages, the recommended dealer service price for the oil change on an M235i is CAD$150 and for an M240i CAD$155. I sampled a number of dealers in Ontario and Alberta and the price was the same.

Here is a screen shot of the package price for the M240i at Ontario dealers

I’ve never had a dealer in Alberta charge above MSRP for any of the service packages. In the past the brake value service package cost for a couple of 3-series we had has been less than the cost of just buying the parts over the counter and DIYing it.

Sounds like you need to call a different dealer.

Here in Calgary, Canada, a 228i oil service at the dealer is CAD$132 (US$101), so on any given day depending on the exchange rate, the same as in Portland.

I haven't paid for an oil change at my dealer in Atlanta, but I heard an SA tell another customer it was $89. That's about what I pay for OEM fluid and a filter online, so not a bad deal.

Diy Advantages

* TRAVEL & DOWNTIME AT DEALER about 1/2 DAY vs 1/2 hour DIY

* OIL AT DEALER IS THE ONE SIZE FITS ALL VISCOSITY

* OIL CHANGE AT DEALER ACCOMPLISHED BY TECH WHO NOT
NECESSARILY TREATS YOUR CAR WITH THE SAME CARE AS DIY

* AS A DIY'er YOU BOND WITH YOUR CAR - JOB SATISFACTION

* DIY - You see 1st hand how dirty and thin the oil is a 10K miles.

Change the oil and filter yourself. The drain plug requires a 17mm socket. The filter housing cap, if it’s like my M240i, is a 32mm short height socket. You’ll need a universal swivel as the filter is buried a bit. Change the oil and filter every ~7k miles. 10k miles is too great for consumer synthetic oils. Buy BMW oil filters from https://thebmwminipartstore.com.

Well here in Dixieland is cost like $28.00 to sent 7qts oil and filter back to FCPEURO.

Still a good deal - but can't get PP EURO 5W-40 that I want so the BMW 5W-30 is what I have been ordering from them.

NOACK 9.6

Interested in less than 7% NOACK - so PP EURO 5W-30 is great and the BMW oil is in the same family and is under 7%. Having lived with an N54 I really want to minimize intake junk -- Redline 5w-30 , PP Euro 5W-40 & BMW oils are the only oils (that I know) meeting this low NOACK. LM just to high.

Let me know of others that meet LL-01 & less than 7% NOACK: confused2

Interesting. I don't think the n55 has that kind of issue with the intake valves though. There is no need for walnut blasting
