Are Fun-Flats More Prone to Flats?
Are they?
This is my first car with run-flats. I've had 4 flats in 2 years. Could be my bad luck but I'm wondering whether others out there have had similar "luck." Last edited by selmeralto; 04-10-2018 at 08:56 AM.. |

In the over 30 years of driving cars I have had a grand total of 4 flat tires. 3 of those were run flats. I don't know if it's luck or karma but I ditch them as soon as I can.

Well, thanks again to aozer. I do have MPSS and they are not run-flats. So the premise of the question is shot: it's probably Philly potholes that are the culprit - at least in my case. On the original question, a TireRack advisor said he had no sense that run-flats were more prone to flats than non RF tires.
Oddly, the shop that fixed my last blow-out put a Michelin Pilot Sport A/3 + on the car. Not a good idea to mix tires, I know. But I was toying with getting tires with a little more traction than the MPSS anyway and I do have some tread wear, so I'll probably switch out the other three for MPS A/S 3 +. Staggered. |

To add, in case people come to this post later. YES, run-flats are more prone to sidewall failure. I've had my car 18 months—7 of those months have been on summer wheels/tires, with the remaining 11 months on the stock, run-flat Cinturato. In those 11 months on the stock run-flats I've had 3 irreparable sidewall failures. Ridiculous.

Ive destroyed a few super sports. Actually had a pretty bad tire failure when the car had only 4k miles on the clock. Tore a gash about 2inch wide in one of the rears. But ive also had a few flats over the years, but most of those were due to constriction near my work.

Now that’s interesting, I went to a local big o tires to get a tire repaired and both the manager and tech said I had runflates due to the “Star” symbol on the tires.🤔 Took it to my buddies work, he pulled the screw out and there was no leak, guess I lucked out🤷🏽*♂️ |

FWIW, I've bashed my alignment out of line at least 3 times over my first 20k miles without damaging either my summer RFT's (contisport 5's IIRC) or my non-RFT winter tires (conti's as well). Just installed non-RFT Contsisports, and the stock staggered wheels passed Hunter balancing, so they aren't warped/dented. I suspect that the variance in damage is more likely related to road-hazards than tire design, given that some can't go a season w/o losing at least one. I'm not super-careful, but I do try to dodge anything that looks like it could hurt. And I'd recc always checking your alignment after one of these injuries - that did eat up my original summers - apparently 'chopping' is a weak spot for the Conti RFTs anyway, but I was SOL b/c the alignment participated.

Run flats are crap! I was at my dealership recently and a customer who just had run flats replaced were back in for another replacement. I think they're designed to blow for running on flat bravado.
